No retirements as India look to put drubbing behind them

ADELAIDE (Reuters) - Charges of complacency aimed at India are only likely to intensify after they fell to a crushing 4-0 series defeat in Australia and an eighth successive loss in overseas tests on Saturday.

The news conference after a fourth emphatic defeat in the series, this time by 298 runs, opened with the team's media manager denying reports back home that a "senior player" - namely Rahul Dravid - would be retiring.

It continued with stand-in captain Virender Sehwag suggesting that all teams suffer poor runs of form and India should just put the humiliating reverse by behind them.

"If you look at the Australian team, they were struggling as well in the Ashes last year and they got out for 47 in South Africa, so it happens with every team so we have to rebuild the team," he said.

"There are experienced players in our team, they are well aware of that and they are working on that, one bad series doesn't make any difference for them, so they are working hard on their batting skills and they'll find a way.

"The best way out is to forget what happened and concentrate on what we will do in coming matches and coming series and practised hard and plan well and execute your plans in the game," he added.

By saying the team needed to be rebuilt, Sehwag made it clear that would not mean the retirement of some of the golden generation of batsmen who arrived in Australia hopeful of winning a first test series Down Under.

"I don't think (changes) are due because the same team played in the last couple of years when we became the number one team in the world with the same batting and bowling lineup," he said.

Sachin Tendulkar had a reasonable series despite failing to capture his 100th international century but Dravid, VVS Laxman, captain Mahendra Singh Doni and opener Sehwag himself were all huge disappointments.

The inexperienced Virat Kohli was the only Indian batsman to score a century in any of the four tests.

Sehwag understood the frustration of fans but said it was at moments like these, not just successes like the 50-over World Cup triumph last year, that the support of the fans was necessary.

"When we won the World Cup everyone was happy and cheering for Team India, and now the time we need the support of the fans and everybody, they should back their own team," he said.

The 33-year-old, who averaged 24.75 runs over the series, said accusations the India team simply did not care enough about losing a test series were well wide of the mark.

"It's very unfair," he said. "I think everybody cares about their performances, about India losing the game.

"We are very passionate about our game and passionate about our team and it's a shame that people are talking about that.

"If you lose the game you should work it out what went wrong and come back and perform well in our next games. We are trying that, but it's not happening and it doesn't mean that we are happy to lose here."

Winning or loosing is part of the game. The matter of importance is how indian players exibit cricketing spirit and cricketing sportsmanship.. senior players must give opportunities to young players to develop. The leading tamil player from sri lanka muttiah muralitharan has shown this to the cricketing world. senior players have already earned billions enough for another ten generations. Why not give chances to young indians.

None of our cricketers or politicians will retire on their own unless they are 'necked out', for there is so much money in the game. Who will say NO TO MONEY in India? Humiliation to the country will soon be forgotten, the same eleven will face defeat in New Zealand also in September and bring more shame to the country. However, their bank balances will increase four-fold. There is no penalty for repeated failures in this country. The so-called 'master blaster' will buy some more fancy super-sports cars and villas. Who cares for the country's pride?

This news comes as a slap to gavaskar. As a international cricketing expert/ commentator, he miscalculated by making his interview statement by saying at least, four players wil be retiring after Australian series. Where did he get his four figure count. Gavaskar, it's time you think before you comment on such issues.

It will be a little bit harsh, if we blame the seniors for the debacle. However, the selectors need to introspect and work on the creation of a pool of talented and experienced players who can immediately fill the shoes once these fine players retires. Because of it's unwarranted obsession with these seniors, a young talented bunch are being deprived of a much needed experiences of playing at fast and bouncing pitch conditions.

Buddy (Sehwag) this is not an elected Govt which should last 5 yrs or 50 yrs convincing people what you did good during your regime. This is a game, and when a team doesn't performs then at least be brave to take the responsibility and accept the defeat instead of giving explanations. You guys are not doing any charity by playing ordinary cricket, you all are paid hell of a lot money for playing competitive Cricket. Grow up boys.

With his dismal and humiliating performance in the recent Test Series in Australia, it is foolish on part of Sehwag to defend the seniors, including himself, Gambhir and Dhoni for the shameful debacle faced by Team India and our country. To uphold the dignity, prestige and honour of our country, the BCCI and the cricket selectors should urgently take hard decision in retiring, compulsarily all the seniors and other dead wood. The others, including Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni and the rest should be warned to improve their performance on the cricket pitch within the given time frame. It is time for the BCCI and the selectors to act and no more sermons.

The recent 4-0 defeat of Indian team and second test series loss is a clear
Cut indications that the team is exhausted by too much cricket. These
Senior players are very good for three to four matches in a year due to
their aging factor. They should be used sparingly as per their fitness. Let some
Young faces are added into the team to improve the image of the country

I think Sehwag himself should consider taking a break. It is downright disrespectful the way he came out in the 2nd innings with the team behind by 500 runs and he being the captain and hitting those lofted shots over the slip cordon. It is no longer funny and does not add to his fan base anymore.

Much of the criticism that is being heaped on our senior players is frankly speaking right But it should also not be forgotten that these very players had raised the stature of game of cricket not only in Indian context. When they contgribute by winning and becoming world champions we consider them out of this world and when they lose we want to throw them as discards. This is a traversty which ought to be taken note of.

In not so distant past, the condition of Astralian team was very weak. There was a question in social media will the Astralian Cricket Team will see winning as they used to do previously. Well they have done this. They also have seen ups and downs. Why not our team. why we are lowering our team members how. Their day and time will also come - come what may. And that day will not be far.

Our Indian team under any captainacy will bounce back. Just spur them up. They need our good will and well wishings. It is not only a wishful thinking. They can and they will one day. I am sanguine about it. These team members have raised the stature of cricket immensely and they need only 'time' for bringing their confidence to fore. And see how much difference it will make.

I believe that day is not far - not a far-fetched idea but a real thing. Our team will come out with flying colours in coming days and keep the tri-colour flying high.

There is no point in blaming the players for their failure , because they are selected by good for nothing and shameless people acting as selectors. Before asking players to retire one should kick out selectors of Indian cricket team. It is better to appoint a retired military general to lead selection committee of Indian cricket like as it is Pakistan. Look at Pakistani cricketers how wonderfully they are beating England team.

what the BCCI watch dog is doing apart from being a mute spectator. indian fans doesnt deserve this afterall all the players are well paid. lets accept the fact that all this big names are not putting serious effort to come back on the game.

As long as politicians rule Cricket India there is NO hope; sack Pawar, Shrikunt & senior players & see the results.

When Austrlian Players went to England they were like us. Cricket is game of twists and fortunes and it is the irony of life after Indian team won the coveted world cup. Our great stalwarts sachin, shewag Dravid Laxmanand the entire team members who still have magic in them and the world will see them in big way soon. dja
