Image in the world of entertainment is a veneer that provides longevity to an actor in acting sojourn, and if a deconstruction of image is attempted, most of the time it is taken recourse to when the actor is undergoing a purple patch. But when one is at the top of their careers, and then decides to take the risk of changing the image, it begs question whether such a step is necessary. It really is a total change of image that Kareena Kapoor has cultivated in the mind of her fans. The popular image that Kareena Kapoor has in the mind of the public is that of Geet from JAB WE MET. That image was further accentuated through 3 IDIOTS as well, of a happy-go-lucky girl.
She tried to go for a change in AGENT VINOD but as the film could not strike a happy chord at the box office; in itself was an indicator that the fans did not like her attempt to change her image.
Now with HEROINE Kareena Kapoor is trying to deconstruct her image. From the perspective of acting, it could be a bold step, but in our country where the image of an actor has certain own connotations, it is very difficult to change the image, and if one changes image then one has to recede in the background for some time, to let the public forget them and then comeback with a new image.
Kareena Kapoor in HEROINE is being shown on the screen uttering expletives, smoking with impunity, indulging in love making on the screen and whether her fans would be able to accept her in this changed image would be interesting to watch.
But it is not only Kareena Kapoor who is taking lead in changing the image, her peers and seniors like Bipasha Basu did it with RAAZ 3 and even Rani Mukherji is doing it with AIYYAA. If one were to discern the trend, can it be said that now all three of them are either in their late thirties or early thirties the element of coyness associated with the age- which appears realistic when one is in the age group of 20-30, does not get expressed through the physical persona, perhaps recourse to exploit the vital physical assets, with ample display of bosom, as it has been done by Kareena Kapoor in HEROINE, BIPASHA has already displayed it amply in RAAZ 3 and even Rani Mukherji is showing it in AIYYAA, to entice the public and try to ensure the loyalty of the fans. It could also be a sign of changing trend, where expression of image conveying element of sexuality has become a norm and so the lead actors like Kareena Kapoor have also decided to join the party.
Fans may not complain seeing vital stats of their HEROINE on the screen, but the moot point would be whether they would maintain the loyalty, as there are scores of actresses ready to leave nothing to imagination on the screen to cultivate a fan following. Such initiatives are more of a one film wonder as once an asset has been displayed on the screen then the sense of anticipation is gone and this is the reason perhaps why the display of physical assets on screen by actresses is a onetime phenomenon. Let's hope it does not happen in the case of Kareena Kapoor post HEROINE.
