Nagaland youth taking to sepak takraw

Aizwal, Feb 24 (ANI): Sepak takraw or kick volleyball, which has its origins in the Malay-Thai Peninsula, is gaining popularity among the youth of northeast region, especially in Nagaland.

Nagaland is currently preparing a sepak takraw team to represent India in international events.

Members of the team, at present, are undergoing extensive physical training at the sports ground of Dimapur Higher Secondary School in Nagaland.

Sepak Takraw Association, which was formed in 2006, introduced this sport to the youth of the state, who took it up promptly.

Nagaland's Sepak Takraw teams have 12 girls and 15 boys. Many of them have been a part of the national team and have represented the country at international championships.

The teams are sponsored by Nagaland's Youth Resource Department.

"Every year players from Nagaland Sepak takraw team are being selected to represent our country. They have brought many laurels for the state as well for our country," said Holshe Khrieo, Nagaland State Sepak Takraw coach.

Sepak Takraw requires agility and flexibility in the players. And, in the northeast, the players have the physique that is suitable for the sport.

Better infrastructure and training facilities will go a long way in honing the players skills.

"In future I want to be among one of the national players and take part in international events and earn a name in this particular game," said Peite, a junior state player.

"Till now the government is providing all the necessary facilities. What we want now is an indoor stadium as it's an indoor game. This would be very helpful," said Kuzevelu, a junior state women player.

With peace and normalcy gradually returning to the northeast region, there is growing hope and enthusiasm among the youth who are now looking forward to actualizing their potential. (ANI)
