Use of morning after pill worries pharmacists

London, Jan 2 (IANS) British pharmacists fear that many women are risking their health by using the morning after pill after unprotected sex.

A poll in Britain has found that one-fifth of women used the emergency contraceptive last year.

The Co-Operative Pharmacy conducted the survey on 3,000 people and found that 20 percent of women aged 18 to 35 took the emergency pill last year. The same proportion said that heavy drinking or taking drugs led to them not using contraception with a new partner.

One in 50 had used the morning after pill three times or more in 2010, the Telegraph reports.

Among 18 to 21-year-olds, one in 50 said they preferred using it as 'a regular form of contraception'.

But Mandeep Mudhar, who heads the National Health Service development at The Co-operative Pharmacy, warned that women should not be using the morning after pill in such a manner.

'The morning after pill should be a last resort to prevent an unwanted pregnancy after having unprotected sex or if another method of contraception has failed, such as if you have forgotten to take one of your contraceptive pills,' Mudhar said.

A sixth of women in the survey admitted to having had a sexually-transmitted infection.

Diseases such as chlamydia, genital herpes and gonorrhoea are on the rise, with almost 500,000 new infections diagnosed in Britain annually.

Mudhar added: 'The emergency contraceptive pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.'

Why do all of us have to give so very importance to SEX. its not some thing so necessary without which you will die.

If one practices responsible parenthood, by having sex only when we are open to life, it would make the act of sex a divine love and not a mear sexual act to satisfy the flesh. Then the question of pills would not arise.

Let not become sex machines having no respect to life.

i still am trying to figure out the part where the pharmacists claim tht the pill has adverse side effects.. All tht i read above is a statistical survey of under wht situation those pills are taken and how it has been on the rise and where they complain that its being used more as a contraceptive. I still did not se the part of the adverse side effects. Then it talks about sexually transmitted diseases cause of unprotected sex. Wht i fail to understand is how is the usage of the Morning After Pill related to sexually transmitted diseases. Some of the sexually transmitted diseases can also occur cause of oral sex.

The above post actually tells nothing other than stating some abstract statistics about how the use of Morning After Pill is on the rise. Moreover there can be a million other reasons for having the Morning After Pill of which having intentional unprotected sex is one. The Pharmacy has completed discounted for the fact that 2 partners, completely loyal to each other, can also have unprotected sex and then decide to have a morning after pill for safety reasons just as to avoid pregnancy or having an immediate child. Also the condom rupture issues are there which happen in a majority of the cases where cheap condoms are used.

So please.. i would request the pharmacy people to stop causing a panic among people by giving such unrelated arguments and suggesting them as side effects or after effects of the Morning After Pill

well ! many comments are already given here, i just wanna say that if one is committing mistake even after knowing all about these side effects n other complications then it is foolishness, otherwise if u does not know about these then you will be able to know after having the problem..........so my opinion is that just enjoy sex and it depend on us whether we want to enjoy it safely or with risk......after all one has right to live life in his/her own way

@ Mr.Francis, WHY BLAME PHARMA COMPANIES & THE DOCTORS-THEY HAVE GIVEN A SOLUTIONS TO A PROBLEM, BUT OVER USE & UNPROTECTED SEX WITH MULTIPLE PARTNERS IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE INJURIOUS TO HEALTH.LET'S NOT FORGET WE ARE NOT ANIMALS GOD HAVE GIVEN US THE GREATEST BOON -THE POWER OF THINKING LOGICALLY-LET'S USE THAT BOON TO THE GOOD EFFECT.

      Dear Ria,
I can't understand, why always girls blaming on men, see dear, men not decided that who will get pregnant, why dont you think about all these before getting enjoying with man, why you allow him to do this without using condom, the fact is that girls want enjoy her own way...most of the time she want man without condom, MAZA BHI LENA HAY OR SIKAYAT BHI KARNI HAY......and about your comment that man dont want woman rise up, App ki yeh harkate jo bina sadi ke enjoy karti hay kya yeh swatantrata nahi hay....i think at present woman more free then man for this particular activities...or agar bachha rakhana chahti ho to kaun tumhe rokta hay...waise hi yaha ek wahi fasal to belagam ho rahi hay...
Being a married person, I know woman know very well about their danger period, all woman agree with me, then who force you to not prevent your self from such kind of situation....but at that time you people not in your control...nashe me dhut tum logo ko (male/female) kaha pata hota hay ki kya kar rahe ho or kiske saath kar rahe ho....knight animals....

      I am sorry Md Shahid
Why all the preachings are only for females ?................why not every human being whether male or female should understand their responsibilty towards the society.
I strongly think men should first control themselves then only come to preach the females.coz preaching is so much easy that it don't need any effort...........but following them is ............. better know all of you.
