New Delhi, Jan. 25: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has exempted all SMS texts sent from an automated machine to handsets and messages sent by an individual to an automated machine from the 200-SMS-a-day limit per SIM card.
Previously, the regulator had exempted some entities which use the facility from the limit. These include educational institutions, banks, insurance firms, credit card companies, various service providers, including dealers of telecom operators, e-ticketing agencies and those providing directory services such as JustDial and social networking sites such as Facebook.
However, following representations by some more service providers such as radio taxi firms and e-commerce companies, the exemption has been extended to all messages sent to and from an automated machine.
"Trai has received representations from the stakeholders that in view of the limit of 200 SMS texts per day per SIM, they are not able to send machine-to-machine and person-to-machine SMS, which are sent by them to initiate processes or applications for their operational requirements," said Trai adviser A. Robert J. Ravi.
He said the regulator had received representations from various companies for clarifications regarding the delivery of information through SMS texts related to services or maintenance provided by them to their customers.
"Trai has duly considered such representations and has excluded all machine-to-machine and person-to-machine messages from the limit of 200 SMS per day per SIM," Ravi said.
These kinds of services include providing details of drivers or taxis on booking of radio taxis, the tentative date of delivery of goods, tentative date of attending to complaints, the contact details of person attending to the complaint, etc, Trai said.
Earlier, the regulator had increased the number of text messages that a person can send from one SIM card in a day to 200 from 100.
