Shillong, May 26: The house guard of Meghalaya Speaker Charles Pyngrope was found dead in his room this morning.
According to police, armed branch constable Iarbor Muktieh, from Mawrong village under Mawhati in Ri Bhoi, was found dead in his room by the Speaker this morning. The matter was reported to the police at around 7am today.
The police carried out the post-mortem and later the body was handed over to the deceased's relatives. The police said the body was found on his bed in the room at the residence of the Sspeaker, where the guard was staying in a room provided by Pyngrope.
Since the guard was not present for his duty in the morning, others searched for him and discovered his body, the police said.
When contacted, Pyngrope said the house guard was suffering from epilepsy and this may have been the cause of his death. He also visited the family of the deceased this afternoon.
GNLA camp destroyed: The camp of GNLA leader Sohan D. Shira situated on a hillock near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills was attacked and subsequently destroyed by security forces this morning.
However, Shira and GNLA cadres escaped from the camp and there was no casualty on either side. The police said the SWAT commandos of the Meghalaya police along with the Cobra unit of CRPF attacked the main camp of the outfit located at Sobokgre village, 16km from Williamnagar at around 10am today. The GNLA militants, who engaged in a counter-attack with the security forces with rocket propelled grenades, later fled the area to take shelter in the nearby Durama Hills.
According to the police, a large stretch of hillock located at Sobokgre had been turned into a camp by Shira. After the exchange of fire, security forces entered the camp and found several makeshift hideouts. The police suspect more than 50 GNLA cadres along with their leader Shira were present in the camp when they were attacked.
