Manila refrained from Syria vote to save workers

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines says it did not take part in a U.N. vote on a resolution calling on Syrian leader Bashar Assad to step down as it seeks Syria's help in moving Filipinos from the troubled nation.

The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday for a resolution backing an Arab League plan calling on Assad to step down and strongly condemning human rights violations by his regime, which has been blamed for a bloody crackdown that has killed over 5,400 people.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said Sunday that the Philippines' main concern was to repatriate thousands of Filipinos in Syria through the help of its government.

Nearly 1,000 Filipino workers have fled from Syria and thousands more remain there.

So easy for many to slam and get racy with Filipinos. They did what's make sense for them. 1. Get their people out (doctors, nurses, engineers, IT and laborers). 2.Their vote in UN is negligible because they are not political or economic power like countries in Europe and America. 3. The only thing their vote can do is put their workers lives in danger. 4. They did not vote NO, nor did they show support the current regime, in fact they are getting out of there. Their decision has nothing to do with colonial, religion or slavery. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the rep decision is not the decision of majority of people in the Philippines.

Amen Jortek. You said it right. Flips just go there to make a living not to interfere in the host's political difficulties. They have their own at home.

Filipinos go there to work (yes, some under slavery conditions, earn some money to survive, and support family they left behind), not to push any political or religious agenda.
The Philippine government is heavily dependent on those remittances of overseas workers which include Syria. It doesn't matter who wins or loses; it's not their game.
They are like government workers here in the U.S., who can vote but not allowed by law to campaign for any party or candidate; they just work for the winning side.

Doing the smart thing can hardly be wrong. What if you were in Syria? Would you make moral statements that would benefit no one, or would you get out?

I agree with Jortech. Philippine has no power, militarily, economically, politically around the world, so stay away from trouble in the middle east. American and Europe will understand.

The Media has been stuck on the figure of over 5,400 Syrians killed for a month, yet 400 to 1000 people are being slaughtered each day in Syria. Assad has killed and/or mutlitated over 20,000 Syrian Men, Women, and Children. They took a little 3 year old boy hostage last week and demanded that his father give himself up or they would kill the boy -- they killed this little 3 year old anyway. Obama, you worthless seed tick, resign.

The corrupt Philippine dictatorship charges a hefty tax on every Pinoy forced to look overseas work as they leave the airport. This overseas remittance is their greatest asset.
Besides, Malacanang will be using the same tactics as Syria should the Pinoy revolt

nobody forces the pinoy to work overseas the lucky ones found works in the states, nothing wrong with that....paying taxes is a duty of everyone.....ur pea brain Paul.

if this is Aquino's yardstick, then he will continue to refrain to vote from a number of abusive and violent countries, like China that executes Pinoy drug mules of chinese controlled drug distribution in the Philippines who lured these stupid Pinoy drug mules in the first place; he will be known as President of Housemaids, where majority of professional Pinoys (mostly teachers)working abroad are all domestic helpers from Hongkong, Taiwan, to the Middle East. On the other hand the sneaky Chinese controls the Philippine economy and siphons all profits to China, Hongkong and Taiwan, the Chinese got their way for decades, bribing corrupt greedy traitor, politicians and government officials from immigration, customs to internal revenue, to even register of deeds, buying vast of lands exclusively for chinese only - Binondo for example, chinese schools, cemeteries, discriminating entry of local Pinoys to these chinese enclaves. What Aquino should do - take back the country from sneaky colonizer chinese - give back to the Pinoy, the retail and wholesale business of the basic economy for a start - salt, rice, food, groceries, clothes, shoes, and so forth, only then will the Philippines be free from the economic domination of the foreigner chinese (who laugh and smirk behind Pinoy's back calling all Pinoys, housemaids) and only then the outflux of Pinoy labor can be controlled and Philippines can be free to vote against abusive countries. The poor will always be there, (it is even written in the bible) but those poor deserve their economic status, they refuse to better themselves, so screw them. President Aquino should face this challenge, otherwise his legacy? President of Housemaids.

Thius is good decision by the Phils. even in small way, the Phils have return a favor to Pres. Assad for giving opportunities for the Filipinos to work in Syria. There is another good way that would benefit both clountries. Why not select some prisoners who would like to work as security groups to protect Pres. Assad and would be pay as OFW also. Why not have the prisoner make use of their to repay the society on the creime they have committed and the same time, their family will be help financially for better future..How about mit Senator Honasan and Mr.Danilo Lim would you be able to organize and do this immediately and this will save the government expenses on thes maintenace and opereation of several jail houses.

the best thing that the government had done now make a deal, Iran's oil is being sold at a discount buy some to help our economy. this is a fight between the jews & the iranians . if i recall right the last war between the jews & the arabs the 1st thing the jews did was to bomb an american navy ship in the area that killed hundreds of us sailors. few americans know these coz their attentions are on sports & entertainment.
