New York, June 19 (ANI): US immigration authorities have said that they won't seek to deport former Indian-origin Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi, who was jailed for using a web cam to spy on his roommate while he was making out with another man.
Ravi is likely to be released from the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick, N.J., on Tuesday, after serving 20 days of a 30-day jail sentence.
He earned the early release for good behavior and work credit.
Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they were not allowed to remove individuals, like Ravi, who are lawful permanent residents of the US, unless they are convicted of an aggravated felony, domestic violence, drug or weapons charges or "crimes of moral turpitude."
"Based on a review of Mr. Ravi's criminal record, ICE is not initiating removal proceedings at this time," the New York Times quoted Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for the immigration and customs agency, as saying.
According to the paper, immigration officials said the decision would be reconsidered only if Ravi commits crimes in the future.
He was found guilty of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy after he filmed gay roommate Tyler Clementi's tryst with another man.
Ravi was also sentenced to do 300 hours of community service and pay 10,000 dollars to assist bias-crime victims. (ANI)
