Largest depositors in Swiss banks are Indians: CBI chief

New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) Indians are the largest depositors in Swiss banks and have stashed a staggering $500 billion of black money abroad for tax evasion, CBI chief A.P. Singh said Monday.

Singh said at the opening of a six-day training of Interpol officers that India suffered from the flow of illegal funds to tax havens like Mauritius, Switzerland, Lichtenstein and British Virgin Islands.

"It is estimated that around $500 billion of illegal money belonging to Indians is deposited in tax havens abroad. Largest depositors in Swiss banks are also reported to be Indians," the head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said.

The Indian government has drawn bitter criticism from opposition parties, activists and from the Supreme Court for its alleged failure to get back vast amounts of black money stashed abroad.

There have been wide-ranging estimates of the amount -- from $500 billion to $1.4 trillion, which is equal to India's annual GDP.

A study by the Global Financial Integrity last year estimated $462 billion of black money was parked in overseas tax havens.

The CBI chief said "inadequate international cooperation and bank secrecy laws" had made it difficult to trace and get back the stashed away "stolen wealth".

"Tracing, freezing, confiscation and then repatriation of stolen assets is a legal challenge," Singh said.

He stressed that asset recovery faced many obstacles including "legal process filled with delays and uncertainty, language barriers and a lack of trust when working with other countries".

He expressed surprise that offshore tax havens were those countries which are "said to least corrupt by the Transparency International index".

"Fiftythree percent of the countries said to be least corrupt are offshore tax havens, where most of the corrupt money goes. The tax havens include New Zealand, which is ranked the least corrupt country, Singapore ranked No.5 and Switzerland No.7."

The CBI chief said lack of political will in the leading tax haven states was one reason why they were not sharing the information with India.

"They are aware of the extent to which their economies have become geared to this flow of illegal capitals from the poorer countries."

The CBI director cited World Bank estimates and said the cross border flow of money from criminal activities and tax evasion was around $1.5 trillion, of which $40 billion is bribe paid to government servants in developing countries.

He said only $5 billion of this money has been repatriated in the last 15 years.

What is the source of such claim? If CBI or government is so confident about this black money, then why they are not taking any stringent step to bring back that money. We have been hearing this claim by CBI and the government since long. My message is strsight: either perform or stop behaving like a spineless gay also stop talking all nonesense. BKLaskar

Is it not crocodile tears of CBI? If they are so confident that $500 billion rupees is stashed at Swiss Bank, minimum of 10 times of that amount is still in India. If CBI knows the figures, they should also be knowing the names.Once, only once, if they shed their selfish mottos, and catch hold of those people, and unearth the black money lying in India with the ministers, politicians and beurocrates, their name will be written in golden letters in the history for rendering a great service to the nation.CBI should act independently(which is not today) and automatically black money can be unearthed. We have no control on the rules of the foreign land but we have definite control over our own country's rules. Why not make use of it?It is only will power and shedding of selfish attitude.CBI should work with no fear or favour.

When the US sees any problem with any country it goes to the UN to impose all sorts of embargo on the country. Many a times we have seen taking stringent action by the International Community with several countries. Why then they cannot get together to take stringent measure against those countries/ banks that does not divulge information on such money. Actually the problem is with the politicians. If this money is gone, they will be in trouble during elections. After all to remain in power one needs muscle - money + hands.

The western powers might have physically left their colonies but in their unique ways they still exploit the resources of their erstwhile colonies. However, the blame lies on both sides - On one side these people who violate their national laws to repatriate their ill gotten wealth and on the other side these safe havens who accept their deposits but poses themselves as champions of freedom and neutrality.

Hang the terrorist who are within your reach then ask the foreign countries to handover the terrorist hiding in there place, likewise unearth the black money in India itself from these seths, netas and sahukaars first,I am 100% sure the black money in India is many times more than the black money deposited in foreign countries, but fr that each n every govt. of state and center need to be strongly will powered, but ironically they are happy in having there peace of cake..!!

But they say it will be difficult for them to get their hands on the black money as if they touch the rich and the elite our economy will crumple (which is actually already crumpled) as this 10% rich are controlling every thing in the country and becoming more rich day by day.The rest are the ones who are religiously paying the tax and taking the entire burden of country to make this rich people more rich by their corrupt practice.

We the people have been taking these on the chin for over 254 years now and we have still not recovered. Remember that the Central Bank of this country was set up by the British rulers back on 1935 and after 64 years of so called " Independence " they still issue currency and regulate interest rates and demand & supply of money. Of course the system is rigged, people have to take it to the streets and get the country back again.

All these years most of the politicians, industrialists business men , smugglers, and the like have been looting the country and accumulating wealth in foreign banks. The govt should get the list of them and confiscate their wealth in all forms in India. No one shold be allowed to go abroad till they surender all ill -gotten wealth. Is there any goverment exissting in India? Our economist ,a genius should take the assistance of eminent lawyers in the country and tighten the grip on those rascals. People are not satisfied with pomp promises: they want performance and results.
First step is to disclose their names.

The people who deposit money abroad have no brains. What is the point in stashing all cash abroad and not able to use it here in our own country. They will be able to spend it only outside India thereby making other nations rich! Real idiots!

      Names not disclosed? enough!
Why and how long to wait for administrative barriers?
Indian brains are super smart in IT, if taken seriousely a couple of them can soon snatch the list by hacking such bank's sites before legal procedure takes decades and centuries.
