Lapang plea

Shillong, Aug. 24: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been requested to elevate Union minister of state (independent charge) Paban Singh Ghatowar to cabinet rank.

The request was made by North-East Congress Coordination Committee chairman D.D. Lapang through a memorandum submitted to Singh.

"It has been noted that the meetings of the North Eastern Council, which is attended by the governors and the chief minister of the constituent states, would be more appropriate and befitting to be chaired by a person of Union-cabinet status," Lapang said.
