A family that misplaced a key to the main door of their Dum Dum flat had jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh stolen by the next day. Members of the family were in a flat on the floor above when the theft took place.
Sanjay Agarwal, a vegetable oil distributor, owns two flats on the ground and first floors of an apartment block near Aamarpally. He lives with his family members in the first-floor flat. The furnished ground-floor flat, from where the jewellery were stolen, mostly remains locked.
"When we could not find a key to the ground-floor flat, we had not taken the matter seriously as we have kids in the house who keep misplacing things," said Agarwal, who had left for his shop on Thursday morning asking his wife to look for the key.
"I had decided to change the lock if the key could not be found. I did not imagine that someone would get into the flat using the key within 24 hours and rob us," he added.
The theft was discovered around 12.30pm on Friday when the trader's wife went downstairs and saw the flat door open. She went in and saw that someone had forced open the doors of an almirah.
"After checking the belongings, she informed me over the phone that a jewellery box kept in a safe in the almirah was gone," said Agarwal.
Cops are verifying whether the door of the flat was opened with the same key that went missing. "The lock might have been forcibly opened with another key. We are interrogating people close to the family who might have access to their home," said an officer of Dum Dum police station.
nThieves held: Dilshad Alam and Md Asgar were arrested on Friday in the Tiljala-Tangra area in connection with cellphone thefts. Seven handsets stolen from a Beniapukur house were found on the two.
