Japan facing worst crisis since World War II: Kan

Tokyo, March 13 (DPA) Japan was currently facing its worst crisis since World War II, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Sunday, as the toll from the earthquake and tsunami crossed the 1,000 mark and amid fears of a meltdown at a quake-damaged nuclear power plant.

Radiation levels had surpassed the legal limits at the Fukushima I plant in north-eastern Japan, 240 km north of Tokyo, officials said Sunday, raising concerns over radiation leaks and a possible core meltdown.

After Japan's most severe earthquake on record and in view of a looming nuclear catastrophe, Kan said the situation at the Fukushima plant 'continues to be in an alarming state', according to the Kyodo news agency.

Kan told reporters that more than 12,000 people had been rescued since Friday. But as local and international search-and-rescue teams continued their search for survivors, police said more than 1,000 bodies had been found.

The number of casualties from Friday's earthquake, upgraded Sunday by Japanese authorities to 9.0 and which triggered a devastating tsunami, was expected to increase dramatically.

Takeuchi Naoto, the police chief of the hardest-hit prefecture of Miyagi, said he had 'no doubt' the toll would rise above 10,000 in the prefecture alone, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The prime minister said that more than 600,000 people in the worst-hit areas had taken refuge in schools and community centres.

'In some places, we saw that houses and buildings had been completely destroyed,' Mikiko Dotsu, the coordinator of a team from Medecins Sans Frontieres, said after she arrived in Sendai near the quake's epicentre.

She said 90 disaster medical assistance teams were deployed in Miyagi, of which Sendai is the capital.

'At the moment, there is very little electricity and no water supply,' Dotsu said. 'People need food, blankets and water. These needs are bigger than medical needs at the moment.'

The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier arrived off north-eastern Japan and began relief operations Sunday after being diverted from war games with South Korea.

The US Navy is to help transport food and people into the disaster area and helicopters on the aircraft carrier began airlifting food aid Sunday, Japan's Defence Ministry said.

A municipal official in Futaba town in Fukushima prefecture told Kyodo news that about 90 percent of the houses in three coastal communities had been washed away by the tsunami.

Kan doubled the number of soldiers sent to the disaster areas to 100,000 as rescue workers were struggling to reach them as many roads were blocked by debris.

'I ask for utmost efforts to save the lives of as many people as possible,' Kyodo quoted Kan as saying after a meeting of the government's emergency disaster headquarters. 'We will put all-out efforts into rescuing people who have been isolated.'

Drinking water was transported to quake-hit regions by truck, and witnesses said residents were rushing to stock up on supplies at supermarkets and petrol stations, buying food and heating oil.

Railway links to the quake-hit regions are to remain closed, Japan Rail said, but it resumed operations in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Highways were also closed.

India definitely can't go to help Japan, it is quite understandable and logical that a country that is too busy with 'good' things' such as political bribery, administrative corruption, dividing society in the name of caste, community, religion and reservation can't spare anytime for trivial things resulting from natural and manmade disasters- faminie, drought, earthquakes, tsunami etc.! India is already too busy with things like CRICKET! ..Nuclear and Missile developments... pleasing the affluent countries with big weapons purchases.... all this too necessary for the health of the country... pl don't disturb this country on such small issues! that's why Indian political leaders asking for permission from a disaster-ravaged country to extend humanitarian help, something like asking for a permission to come to a person's house to express condolences where a casualty has taken place! good, v.good India, keep up, because MERA DESH MAHAN !!!!!........

U are absolutely right in analyzing our state of affairs. It is a big shame on us. We are self centered & care too hoots about the issues around us.

i 100% agree with above. what is the use of writting letter to Japanese people and just sending "kAMBALS" is too small a help from India. At least 2000 indian troops would have been sent by now. G.O.I is acting too slowly and don't expect any quick help, if ever GOD punishes us. GOD is watching every action of ours.

The kind of devastating disaster that shook Japan is beyond our imagination and thinking. It caused widespread human and property losses; the former is supreme to the Country and Universe as a whole. I believe that the Japanese would bounce back with Christ blessing in the days ahead. We all should unite our hearts and minds with them during these hours of crises so that they put their lives in the hands of God. May the Good God be with each one them and bless them all to endure prevailing crises by placing all their resources and means to alleviate the sufferings of the mankind. Let us all unite and stand with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

This is the time to show India's might .. Instead of dropping few woolen blanketswe should immediately send shiploads of water, food and medicines. Deploy personnel from Indian Army for search and rescue operations.. Send engineers to fix communication systems and transportation... Why wait for word from Japan? Chinese army personnel have already reached Japan and India will wait for next few years to send some blankets!! Wake up India ..

May God help the people of Japan in this time of turmoil.

It is our greed which is bringing this planet to an end God is watching everything silently, there are millions of people who have no proper food to eat even for a single day. Wealthy nations have control of the worlds economy and pushing the under developed and developing countries into utter chaos. In this nature every human being has equal right on every natural resource that comes out of it. But however I see today it is out of reach of the common man. God so loved the people of Japan that he didnt want them to see the much more worst day that are coming ahead, so he called them into his arms to rest in peace.

Nations are fight among themselves or fighting within themselves for their dirty greed of power. The very mankind is put to sufferings. Food prices are soaring up day by day, fuel prices going up.
Why nuclear? Why every nation wants to become a nuclear power today..? Learn world learn this world is not in the control of mankindit God who created and he an every right to destroy, let not the human destroy in the name of Nuclear
See the nuclear reactors exploding after the devastationOne day we are going to get this world to an end with our deeds and greed. Its not the GOD.
It is said by God: - God so loved the Human being that he created Earth for his living
God so loved the world, in which he made a human being in his resemblance.
But the dirty greed of power and vengeance of the nations is today killing the resemblance of God.
PEOPLE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE DISAGREE WITH..WHAT I SAY.
A QUESTION FOR EVERY PERSON READING TO MY COMMENT ON THIS PAGE.

Japanes nuclear power is to generate energy electricity not to make nuclear bombs.

I Don't agree with you...Is that you want to say that the people work hard and harder make things for the people who don't have..No No..Why do you think in this way! God Could have given the Support to those people who don't have. This is not the right way of (If) Punishing....

I appreciate the Japanese to be anti islamic,i appreciate them banning the hijad, koran and other evils of satanic islam, first of all islam itself is a curse for humanity,Gods only mistake in his wonderful creations is to create islam which is a good for nothing religion, islams only contribution to the world is,robbery, cheating, extortions, cutting the heads of innocent people, conversion by the sword, killing animals without any mercy.

I agree with Shivang. We Indians have become insensitive due to infection of deadly virus CRICKET. Just remember humanity is supreme. Just remember how Japan helps others in the enevt of calamity.
I suggest that all profits of the World Cup including half fees of players be given to Japanese.

i have no words to say about the critical condition, which japan is facing now due to tsunami , heart is coming to my mouth after listening and watching disaster in news , some where we humans are also responsible for this because every body is playing with nature and we can't predict nature !

in the end i would just like to say about japan "stay strong japan "
      all world is with you.

Its a colossal disaster & the whole world must unite to support Japan in their difficult hour. its the time to take action such as : collect & despatch necessary articles that could of of use in affected areas etc (such as blankets, clothes, medicines, baby food).
only the insane can use this moment to compare Indians with Japanese or think about what defects each has. its important to accept people as they are, our strength lies in our diversity & sense of compassion.
