Italy regrets fishermen killing, row persists

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) India and Italy Wednesday failed to resolve their row over the killing of two Indian fishermen, with Rome regretting the deaths but insisting they took place in international waters. New Delhi made it clear that the two arrested Italian Marines will face Indian law.

After meeting Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur, Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Staffan de Mistura voiced "terrible sadness" over the Feb 15 killing of the fishermen off Kerala.

"We do acknowledge and recognize that two Indian fishermen died. No one doubts it, and it is terribly sad," de Mistura told reporters here. He is set to visit Kerala where the Marines are in custody.

The meeting came three days after talks between Indian and Italian officials failed to break the impasse.

Salvatore Girone and Latorre Massimillano, the Italian Marines on board the Italian ship who fired at the fishermen mistaking them to be pirates, have been charged with murder.

De Mistura said the killings happened in international waters "and investigation will ascertain the exact position" of the Italian merchant ship, Enrica Lexie,

"We are definitely expressing terrible sadness and regret over the loss of lives. Two Indian fishermen did die and they belonged to poor families," he added.

Kaur said after the talks that there was no agreement between the two sides. "(We) will certainly go by our law. As far as law is (concerned), they have their interpretation and we have (ours)."

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi is to visit India for further talks.

Italy says the incident took place in international waters and the Marines cannot be tried in Indian courts. New Delhi contests both the claims.

Kaur said the Italian Marines "are on Indian soil" and "we have taken note of what (de Mistura) said".

The Italian ship is now berthed in Kochi. The marines were arrested Sunday.

Italy says the presence of armed naval personnel on board a merchant ship flying the Italian flag is ruled by a specific Italian law in keeping with UN resolutions regarding the war on piracy.

A Kerala court has issued a warrant to search the Italian ship to seize the gun that killed the Indians.

Italian authorities are probing why its merchant ship ignored the Italian Navy's objections and docked in Kerala leading to the arrest of the Marines.

The navy had reportedly objected to Enrica Lexie moving into Indian waters and the disembarkation of its military personnel on board, reported the Corriere della Sera, a news website.

By just regretting the lives of poor fishermen will not come back. If Italy does really regret the icidence from heart, it should bot try to hinder the justice to the families of poor fishermen families. Let the murderers be shot in the public square in kerala and the Italian govt should support this. If it doesnt it is just hypocrisy

First thing, India lost lives of its two innocent fishermen. So, It has the right to probe in to it. And Indian law does not differentiate the accused on the basis of nation but tries to give justice to the victims without considering whether he/she is an Indian or foreigner. So Italy should realise the fact, what is useful.

There is no need to apologize. Think India was in a position as Italy.

Cold blooded murder and Italians should be tried for the murder of two Indians in India. Let them rot in Indian Jails for life.

See how much importance, the Italian officials are paying to save their to murderers who killed our unarmed fishermen. He says that their people carried arms in Merchant Ship according to Italian law. He also says that it is International waters, but our Minister of State, Mr. Praneet Kour is not stressing that the cause of action has taken place in our waters. He only says that culprits will be deal with under Indian Law.

International water is beyond 200 nautical miles from the see shore of Kerala. Our Minister may be very well knowing this but does not dare to utter.

Our minister does not dare because he is a pet of the Congress chief !

Would Italy. or for that matter, any so-called advanced/developed country have forgiven Indians if the same situation happened in Italian waters? Nail the two persons guilty under Indian laws. Why is India slipshod and slow in acting diplomatically? Our external affairs ministry is perpetually in the sleep mode like our minister!

Elections are going on,else these Italian marines would have reached home already, thanks to mama mia. They are already been given royal treatment by Kerala police. And on top of all this the Vatican has also issued a fatwa to free the killer marines.Nothing is going to happen to the marines the families of the fisherman will be lucky if they get some compensation.

      SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE:

      1. Dead Indian Fisherman cannot be brought back to life.
      2. Apparently Italy Marines had no intention to kill Indian Fisherman
      3. It is not known killing was the only option left with Italian Marines.
      4. Benefit of doudbt can be given to both - Marines and Fisherman.
      5. Best would be get the Marines proceded according to Italian Law
      6. Meanwhile pay compensation to persons left behind the Fisherman.
      7. This will optimise the scope for ship leaving Indian shore
      8. Italy and India appear to be friendly nations. They have no score to settle.

I still don`t get this thing. Merely two fishermen were killed and the govt nw is hesitant to release the suspects.
Wht action has been taken by our Govt against the Srilankan navy, who ve killed more than thousand innocent tamil fishermen till now ?
Is justice being served based on one`s origin ? Don`t they value those lives too ?
      • pushkar 3 months ago
        dont mix the two issues.
Support the fact that the govt has woken up and is taking action

We should not buckle down under Diplomatic pressure or pressure from the church and give up our sovereignty.
      • Commoner 3 months ago
This is possible only if there is no interference from the chairperson of the UPA

It is now in Times Now channel that Italy cardinal and vatican are putting pressure on the govt for the release of Italian third class (!) sailors. Govt must not buckle down . Who is church ? Bhainchod Pope ! The Indian law will prevail and will punish them.
      • Joe matthew 3 months ago
What ever happened is condemable and those accused should be tried according to law , you should respect our Catholic Pope like many of us respect your deities, just because you don't believe it doest mean you turn offencive, and yes the Church means a lot, if you are so concerned do note both the firshermen sadly killed were Christians none from your community that you are dragging this topic , about Cardinals topic he was misquoted by the Italian press.
      • Arun 3 months ago
I do not believe in any religion but humanity ! The fishermen killed were Christian as you say but I don't have any objection for their faith and I respect that they were Indians and hence I again dare to say that the Pope has no business to pock his nose in this matter. Who is Pope to interfere in the law of this land ? Why should he pressure the govt ? We respect YESHU but not the Pope ! This post of a pope has created a havoc in the past in europe and other parts of the world. What is witch hunt ? What about inquisition movement in Goa ? Did Pope apologize for it ? NEVER !

What is Mrs Sonia's reaction? I am sure she will be at their rescue in future once the thing is slightly calm here.

After the much publicised current elections are over, all the most crooked (typical Italian DNA) co-nationals of the most cunning, crooked Italian godmother of the evil Congress party (the most evil, worst Indian-Italian mafia) will soon walk out scot-free. Any doubts, my good fellow citizens ???
