Securitymen must help achieve economic development: Patil

The police and paramilitary forces must assist the government in its stepped up efforts for economic development and social justice in the country, Union home minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday said.

The forces must equip themselves to provide adequate security to those who want to contribute with their sweats to the country's economy which was growing at fast pace, he told Assam Rifles jawans at Shokhuvi near here.

"Some forces try to obstruct this process of economic resurgence, but you must remove such obstruction and law and order must be maintained at any cost," Patil said after taking salutes of new recruits of the country's oldest paramilitary force at ARTC School parade ground.

The minister said assured the chief minister and the home minister of Nagaland all helps from the Centre.

Mentioning diversified roles played by Assam Rifles since middle of 19th century in north eastern region, Patil reminded the force that it had vital role also in restoring peace in the region in close co-ordination with civil administration.

Altogether 235 new recruits from Sukhovi, Diphu and Lakhimpur units passed out in today's parade.

Patil was accompanied by Nagaland Home Minister Imkong Imchen, Commissioner of Minorities Commission Suresh Kishwani, Special secretary (internal secretary) M L Kumawat and Joint Secretary (North-east) Naveen Verma and JS (BM) Sadat Kant.

Later, Patil met Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet colleagues and senior civil, police, paramilitary and army officials at Raj Bhavan in state capital Kohima and reviewed the latest situation in the state, official sources said.
