Gujarat IPS officer caught 'cheating' asked to file reply

A 10-member Examination Reforms Committee of Gujarat University which is looking into an alleged case of Gujarat IPS officer Rajnish Rai using "unfair means" during an LLB examination has given him time till Wednesday to present his side of the story.

Appearing before the committee on Sunday, Rai pleaded that he be provided with all necessary documents concerning his case so that he could file an adequate reply.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Rai said, "I was informed about this meeting only on May 9. The incident had happened two weeks back. I had requested that a copy of all documents connected with the process be handed to me but it was never done." Rai has also filed a similar petition before the Gujarat High Court.

Rai was 'caught by an invigilator at Siddhartha Law College, Gandhinagar, on April 25 for using a footrule "with answer scribbled on it" during his first part LLB examination.

On April 29, in a statement issued to the press, Rai had denied media reports following the incident that said he was caught copying.

Rai, a DIG in the state Crime Records Bureau, Gandhinagar, was instrumental in the arrest of suspended IPS officer D G Vanzara in connection with Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
