The members of various associations of the Tamil film industry - who failed to turn up during the protest fast organised in Chennai on April 4 in connection with the Hogenakkal drinking water project - will be served showcause notices and asked to explain their absence within 15 days. This was decided at a meeting of the office bearers of the associations here on Tuesday.

Noted cine personalities like directors K Balachander and Bharathiraja, music directors Ilayaraja and A R Rahman and some actors were among those who were missing on the day when Kollywood attempted to put up a united front against Karnataka. The 15-day breather comes at a time when the grapevine has it that prominent figures may face the music for not turning up. After a meeting of the South Indian Artistes Association (Nadigar Sangam), Tamil Nadu Producers Council (TNPC) and South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC), Nadigar Sangam president Sarath Kumar said the absentees were being given a chance to explain themselves before deciding on the further course of action.

The office bearers also decided to discuss the issue with their counterparts in Karnataka to avoid such spats in future. "We have decided to speak to the producers' council and artistes association of Karnataka. There have been instances in the past when Tamil film personalities or Tamil films were attacked in Karnataka. We will try to put an end to such unfortunate incidents through discussions," said Sarath. Regarding a section within the industry issuing warnings against superstar Rajnikant for his remarks against Kannadigas, Sarath urged them not to target one particular individual.
