Gates Foundation to get Indira Gandhi peace prize

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will receive the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2007 for "its pioneering and exemplary philanthropic work around the world and in India in health, especially in helping fight disease, illness and poor health conditions in the developing world." "Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Foundation is an inspiring example of what can be achieved through a combination of exceptional generosity and excellent management," a release issued by the international jury of the award said on Friday.

"The Foundation works through partnership, improves people's lives through the power of science and technology. It works with governments, business and non-profit organisations. In the course of over a decade, the Foundation has built an endowment of $38.7 billion and made grant commitments of $16.3 billion. It works throughout the US and in more than 100 countries, and has been active in India for several years," the announcement said. The Award ceremony will take place in New Delhi in the first week of November.
