Indian 'jugaad' comes to New York

New York, Feb 9 (IANS) Jerry-rigged cars, homemade stoves and do-it-yourself water filtration are all examples of what the Indians call 'jugaad' in Hindi or 'making do' with what they have on hand in Indian cities.

Now Americans for the first time are set to experience 'jugaad' - loosely translated as that certain resourcefulness and innovation found in Indian cities - at an exhibition 'Jugaad Urbanism: Resourceful Strategies for Indian Cities', opening here Thursday.

Organised by the Centre for Architecture, the first exhibition in the US on contemporary Indian urbanism explores how the energy of citizens 'making do' can be an inspiration and a catalyst for the worldwide community of architects, designers, and urban planners.

With so much emphasis on high design and high-tech in typical architecture shows, an exhibition focussing on design by the people, for the people, of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune brings a new perspective to the international conversation about designing for life in contemporary cities.

The exhibition on view Feb 10-May 21 juxtaposes these homemade solutions and the 'designed' ones, showing how the two can build off of one another to improve city life.

As curator Kanu Agrawal says, 'Jugaad strategies allow designers to work with maximum adaptability and imagination'.

'Inspired by the skill and ingenuity of grassroots tactics as well as a careful use of meagre resources, designers can be thoughtful contributors for healthier, safer, and more equitable cities.'

'With their organisational skills and expertise they can provide examined ways of improving living conditions,' he says.

Margaret Castillo, president of the American Institute of Architects' New York Chapter, says: 'Together, the exhibition and programmes aim to educate both local and international audiences about the critical issues of growing cities.'

'While Mumbai may seem a world away from New York City, the lessons learned from its empowered citizens and designers can be applied to rapidly expanding cities with similar issues, such as Rio or Guangzhou.

'Object-based, small-scale urbanism proves that good design has the power to make the world a better place,' she says.

Related programmes will include a day-long symposium on informal settlements and low-income housing in India, organised in partnership with the UN Human Settlements programme, and a weekly film series of documentaries and Bollywood features that focus on life in contemporary India.

The exhibition is organised in partnership with the India China Institute at The New School, the Indo-American Arts Council and the Society of Indo-American Engineers and Architects.

Hey Blackcherry, improve you English. Re-read the comment you replied to. Curtains were used to LOWER them, not to protect them from gun shots.

Once all these "JUgaads" are exhibited, the Americans are going to take out the best ideas refine and patent them and couple of year down the line, we are going to see those products being sold in India and Indians will pay through their nose to buy these as well.

if you are aware of the this problem, why don't you take even a small step to solve it. remember, if you are aware of a problem and do not do anything, then you are equally responsible for it!

Sala ye "jugaad" bhi ajab cheez hai. Jugaad se hi hum badnaam hai aur jugaad se hi hamara naam. "Jugaad" saves our faces from the most trickiest of situations but depending on "Jugaad" because of our laidback & lithargic attitude is also world famous.
I think there should be a separate planning & jugaad department in every organisation, coz only when planning fails then jugaad deptt will come into play.

indian jugad means'' anil ambani will take money from market through shares without buying the land for relience power.
p k mittal will not pay salary to their employee and buy steel company in entire world''.
icici pru life will take money for online insurance plan from its customer and will not refund money for a long period if insurance is not given.

Jugaad means to manage & run the show with the available resources
( which are always at short supply) with required manipulation. When the things become difficult to manage both the ends, Jugaad comes in to picture & more or less every body does this type of Jugaad. In the present day scenario in our country things are managed through Jugaad only. It's nice to hear that our art of Jugaad is now exported to USA to teach them how to manage or manipulate the things. Quite interesting ! One day it may find a place in Business School's Curriculum.

Why Indians do jugaad? becoz population is the highest. if u reduce the population , then no need for jugaad.
simple have only one kid. then no need to do jugaad. this is all drama done by the jugaad exhibition. the organizers make money out of all this. Instead organize exhibistion to control population. Expose corruption. Organize exhibitions to show how corruption is done in India.

Jugad stands for instant ways and means and an innovative solution on the spot without any loss of crucial and valuable time and also it amounts to a face saving act driven by instincts, reflexes and need of the hour. This often helps people to overcome emergencies and exigencies countered en route to a target to be achieved. This more or less is similar to identifying the difference between intelligence and wisdom. Some people are good innovators capable of swift solutions to problems applying intelligent skills where as some others give you a long standing solution involving time and money applying wisdom and knowledge.

It is an appropriate technology and also called need-based technology. It is almost eco-friendly all the time. It is free competition as far as utilization of resources and production activities are concerned. No patents, no copy rights etc, and as such no monopoly as available and practiced in capiatalist economy. Imitation is freely available to any one. It is therefore a free society. It serves the miimum purpose of any one to lead a happy life style.

'JUGAAD' is the indian way to adapt oneself to the given resources to meet an end. If we look at the distant past indians have always adapted themselves to the given environment by using the available resources to meet the objective. This is with minimum threat to the environment. The world should know about it. In fact the world can learn a lot from India except POLITICS, POLITICIANS AND THEIR CROOKED WAYS. Ironically THEY also do JUGAAD but to fill their coffers here or in Switzerland.

JUGAAD= a word invented by lazy Indian for doing a work lazily with minimum resources and then take a long JUGAI and claim that how much hard work it was. GOOD WORD FOR LAND OF LAZINESS. ARISE AWAKE AND TAKE A JUGGAD. SEE RAJA HOW MUCH JUGAADOO HE WAS. LEARN FROM ISRO FOR JUGAAD TO ARRANGE PRIVATE SATELLITE. JUGAAD TO EARN MONEY FROM COMMONWEALTH BY KALMADI. JUGAAD TO REMAIN SILENT BY OUR BELOVED PM.
