Indian farmers dump bags of snakes in tax office

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Two farmers fed up with alleged bribery demands emptied three bags filled with slithering snakes in a busy tax office in northern India, an official said Wednesday.

The 40 or so snakes of different sizes and species — including at least four deadly cobras — sent clerks and villagers climbing atop tables and scurrying out the door to escape the office in Basti, about 186 miles (300 kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, said Uttar Pradesh state official Ramsukh Sharma.

"Snakes started climbing up the tables and chairs," he said. "There was total chaos. Hundreds of people gathered outside the room, some of them with sticks in their hands, shouting that the snakes should be killed."

No one was bitten or injured in the incident Tuesday afternoon, and police and forest officials captured the snakes.

The farmers had been asking for tax records for their land in nearby Narharpur village, but tax officials withheld the files for weeks while allegedly demanding bribes.

Sharma said their method of protest was unacceptable. Police are searching for the farmers, who were identified as Hukkul Khan and Ramkul Ram. Khan is known locally as a snake charmer.

These guys are heroes. I wish they would come to Washington and do this at the Capitol, or the Stock Exchange on Wall Street.

Glad the snakes didn't bite one of the corrupt tax guys, the poor snake would have been poisoned and died.

Political protest? Using serpent like politicians to get their point across!
Sorry that is an insult to the snakes.

such a medieval system, allowing officials to demand bribes...hmmm...lot like a bank charging for this or that now that I think about it....(this is called sacasm) While the farmers should not have resorted to snakes it was better than resorting to a gun...

Please don't insult the snakes by comparing them to bureaucrats and politicians.

Praise to the farmers. They got the attention of the world. This was one of the best examples of a protest against corruption I have ever read. I hope the Indian Government pins medals on them.

DK, would you still be praising the farmers if one of the cobras bit a kid there with their parents? Or is that an "acceptable lose for the cause", considering it's not your loss.

Now if we could only round up the REAL snakes in government, bag them, and dump them on an island where they could never do anyone any more harm.
Of course, it would have to be a REALLY big island... Antarctica maybe?

"Sharma said their method of protest was unacceptable" LOL! What the tax officials did was acceptable? They need to start dropping snakes(not poisonous though, as it could backfire, if someone got bit and died) into offices of the corrupt politicians. Will rid India of the corruption in a matter of months.

If this happened here they would end up getting charged with illegally transporting dangerous animals, assault with a deadly weapon (one count for each snake) and probably several other things. They'd end up with life in prison.
