Indian comic book pioneer 'Uncle Pai' dies at 81

The publisher of Indian comic book illustrator Anant Pai's series on Hindu mythology says the artist has died from a heart attack at age 81.

ACK Media Marketing Manager Rushabh Sanghavi says Pai died unexpectedly late Thursday after undergoing surgery on Saturday for a fractured foot.

The fracture forced him to skip India's first-ever Comic Con over the weekend, where fans gave him a lifetime achievement award that was collected by his longtime editor Reena I. Puri.

Pai, affectionately known as "Uncle Pai," is credited with helping to launch India's comic book industry in the 1960s with his "Amar Chitra Katha" series chronicling the ancient Hindu epics Mahabarata and Ramayana. In 1980 he released the first comic in his wholesome children's series "Tinkle."

Anant Pai shall remain the best story teller for kids in our world. He is solely responsible for teaching and creating interest in Indian Mythology, History and Culture. Our loss is God's Gain. I have ALL the ACKs titles except 3 viz. An Exciting Find, Indus Valley Adventure and Manonmani. I wish someone would help me out in getting these 3 titles. I have many duplicates/triplicate issues of many ACKs which I am willing to part with. My contavt number is 9619928681. I also have duplicate copies of some titles of Adarsh Chitra Katha, Chaturang Chitra Katha, Daimond Chitra Katha, Vasan Chitra Katha, Gaurav Gatha, Manoj chitra Katha, Indrajal Comics etc..Raju Shankar Naik

Tinkle had everything...the stories were simple but reflected indian values and ethos.. amar chitra katha brought forward priceless tales from indian mythology..i'm happy to have grown up reading these stories as against the new generation lost in a virtual world..i'm sure a lot of people would be eternally grateful to you uncle Pai. may your soul rest in peace.

Its with deep sadness that I pay my homage to India's Walt Disney Uncle Pai, a visionary and a great story teller, without whose efforts what would be my childhood or infact many a Indian's childhood would as dull as doody. May he rest in peace.
