New Delhi, May 12 (IANS) The Delhi High court Monday issued a notice to the central government on a petition challenging the implementation of the quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) students in higher educational institutions.
A division bench headed by Justice T.S. Thakur issued the notice seeking reply within four weeks and posted the matter for July 10.
The petition filed by the Pan-IIM Alumni Association pleaded that an April 20 memorandum by which the government intended to implement the OBC reservation in higher educational institutions be stayed.
During the hearing earlier, counsel for the government had contended that the petition was no longer maintainable and argued that the petitioner's plea that the benefits of reservation cannot be provided to a candidate after graduation was wrong.
The association, in its petition, has contended that the government has misinterpreted a Supreme Court judgement upholding the OBC reservation law and that the apex court had said it would not be applicable for graduates.
