Brussels, March 26 (IANS) The European Union has congratulated Pakistan's new Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani and reiterated its commitment to help build peace in that country.
The takeover by Gillani 'is an important step in the development of democracy, stability and security in Pakistan', said a statement by the EU Presidency held currently by Slovenia, EuAsiaNews reported.
The EU also welcomed the release of judges detained under the emergency rule, saying: 'This marks a positive move towards the restoration of rule of law in Pakistan'.
The statement said the EU was committed to help the Pakistani people build a peaceful, democratic and prosperous country.
