India, China boom led to higher fuel prices: White House

Washington, Feb 22 (IANS) The White House has attributed the rising fuel prices in America partly to the economic boom in countries like India and China and unrest in other parts of the world.

"The rise in gas prices is clearly the effect of a variety of factors on the global price of oil. They include unrest in certain regions of the world. They include growth in areas like China and India," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Tuesday.

The hike in global oil prices underscores the need to improve upon the alternate sources of energy and putting into place a comprehensive energy policy, he said when asked about a comment by Republic presidential candidate Newt Gingrich that Obama wants more expensive gas.

"The fact that this is happening only underscores the need, as it did last year when prices went up, and as it did two years before that -- underscores the need to have a comprehensive energy policy," Carney said noting that President Barack Obama has been putting such a policy into place.

"That has resulted in more domestic oil production than we've had in the past eight years, greater sales of leases in the Gulf and elsewhere to increase our production, the reduction in our reliance on foreign energy sources," he said.

Carney said these are the kind of policies that have long-term, positive impact on the American economy and on national security.

"We can reduce our reliance on foreign sources of energy if we expand in every direction ... to dramatically reduce our consumption of oil and save Americans $1.7 trillion in costs," he added.

So shutting down drilling in the gulf had nothing to do with higher prices?
Nice try. What is your next excuse?

lack of refinery capacity which has been a function of capitalism..........too little profit to be made on the refniing side right now, so refiners are not willing to expand, upgrade or build

    • tayronachan  •  3 months ago
That is a load of B_S! The boom in India and China might be a small factor. But the main reason oil is so high is it is pegged to the dollar which is being devalued daily by all the bailout and stimulus. You take two pre 1964 US silver dimes (that's .20 cents in case anyone forgot) and you can buy a gallon of gas and have change left over! I #$%$ dare anyone here to prove other wise, and I'll call you out as a SHILL for the Federal Reserve, and I'll call you a complete and utter duffus. I got silver. Do you? Ron Paul = Truth

yeah you could also buy a loaf of bread for about the same.... what is your point? this ain't 1964
      • tayronachan 3 months ago
Again, in case you missed it. I can still buy a gallon of gas for less than .20 cents. As long as I use two pre-1964 silver dimes. And I'd have change left over to buy that loaf of bread. Oil has not gone up in price. The dollar has gone down. Ron Paul = Truth

When Bush was President, he was blamed for high gas prices. Now,
Obama sets the blame on India, China and Iran?

      Double standards, anyone?

AND YOU DOING WHAT ABOUT IT???
    • Adrian  •  Richmond, United States  •  3 months ago
Well, Obama did do his bit toward increased drilling. He gave 22billion of our cash to Brazil to drill, in pretty much the same places as were the rigs that he shut down.

more white house #$%$ what happen to the committee the president was going to put together to look into the rising price a gas a year ago and why is the government allowing oil companies to ship gasoline out of the country to foreign nations to line their pockets on both ends. getting higher prices overseas and causing the price of gas to rise in this country. where's the corporate responsibility that all these corporations are always exposing. the new motto for the country should be GREED BEFORE COUNTRY. the sad part is its the little guys that pay through the nose for all the corruption and greed while the fat cats go merry along their way and give us some #$%$ platitude and cliche`s that are supposed to soothe are ruffled feathers

Got to blame someone else. Can't take credit for screwing up domestic energy policy.
Like the Keystone pipeline, ban on gulf oil drilling and pandering to big oil companies.

The Americanization of China and India will consume all the resources on earth. We are doomed as these people turn in the bicycles for vehicles, while Obama wants all of us to assume their position, because he thinks we are the world evil inhabitants.
    • kathy  •  3 months ago
could it also be because: you shut down drilling in the gulf, you allow us to produce oil then we sell it to other countries (you have had 3 yrs to change it), and you turn down pipelines?

That isn't what you said when George Bush was in office, Mr. President. I think you blamed him for the high prices. Remember, it's the economy, stupid?

By producing more of our own oil (we have a LOT). We would be at a much longer arms length from all the speculation and chaos caused by OPEC and the other third world oil producing nations. Unfortunately Obama has turned his back on every opportunity to enhance our own oil producing infrastructure. (Alaska and Gulf Drilling, Oil Pipeline)
