Imran: 'Telling adults to drink at 25 only is illegal and counter productive!'

His agenda is quite a spirited one. Truly so, considering that Imran Khan is opposing the State government's decision of increasing the age limit from 21 to 25 years for those adults desirous of consuming alcohol. At Mehboob Studios in suburban Mumbai, the yuppie actor addressed a meeting, briefing media persons about the agenda at hand.

"At the very outset, I'd like to tell everybody that I'm not advocating drinking alcohol," he said. "Alcohol can damage health, ruin character and tear families apart, and I know that first hand. But I am opposed to the State government's decision to increase the legal drinking age from 21 to 25 years. I feel that as a democratic society, it it goes against our basic constitutional rights."

Added Imran significantly, "If consumption of alcohol is legal in our country, then as adults we should have the right to decide whether we want to partake of it at all in the first place. It is of my opinion that imposing an age limit of 25 years, in fact, is illegal and will be counter productive. It is my opinion and also the opinion of those in my age bracket and those in younger age groups too that this is not fair."

As regards the modus operandi that he's adopted, Imran stated, "I have spoken to my lawyers and filed a PIL in the courts, for addressing this issue, since I feel that the courts are the mediators. I would like the government to review their decision as regards this matter."
