    Improve Your Car’s Fuel Efficiency

It’s really exasperating to see fuel prices skyrocketing, right? We can only feel helpless in the face of recurring and economy-driven price fluctuations.  Seeking measures to improve fuel economy is the only way to combat rising fuel prices. Do not disregard these simple guidelines; each little step can really start adding up to significant savings to your budget.

    Check Tyre Pressure

Keeping the tyres well inflated is one of the simplest things you can do to help improve your car’s fuel efficiency. You can improve the mileage by about 3.3 percent if you keep your tyres inflated properly, according to the DOE.

    Lighten Your Load

Empty out your boot of unnecessary items. For every extra 45 kg you carry, your fuel efficiency can drop by 1-2% in a typical vehicle.

    S-L-O-W D-O-W-N

The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. Driving within the speed limit recommended by the manufacturer helps save fuel. Driving just 5mph over the speed limit can affect fuel economy by up to 23%. Likewise, quick acceleration consumes too much fuel; accelerate slowly and gradually.

    Do Fuel Quality/Types/Additives Help Mileage?

Petrol pump attendants often try to convince you to go for ‘Speed petrol’ or ‘X-tra Mile diesel’. But this need not necessarily help improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Always use the grade recommended for the vehicle by the manufacturer. Higher octane fuel may not only be a waste of money but may harm the vehicle, as well. However sticking to one brand of fuel is always good for the engine. Know more about Octane Ratings

    Tune Your Engine

A well-tuned engine can improve fuel economy by up to 4%. So change your oil and follow your car manufacturer’s recommendation on servicing.

    Clean the Air Filters Regularly

Air filters keep impurities from damaging your engine. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve fuel economy by as much as 10%.

    Keep the Windows Closed

Driving with your windows open considerably reduces mileage, far more than keeping the AC on while driving along highways. So preferably keep the windows closed and the AC on if you want to keep cool. Of course the air-conditioning decreases fuel efficiency considerably, so use it judiciously. Windows down or A/C on — which is more fuel-efficient?

    Clean Spark Plugs

Ensure your spark plugs are in good condition. Renew the plugs and wires at intervals specified by the manufacturer. This will keep all cylinders firing properly resulting in higher efficiency.

    Don’t Be a Clutch-Driver

Never keep your foot on the clutch while driving. When you do this, pressure is being placed on your clutch, and it not only reduces mileage, but also wears out the clutch plate, replacing which is not cheap.

Keep the Car in Showroom Condition

It’s always prudent to keep the car in the showroom condition. Remember that any modification to the car, such as broad tyres, diffusers etc., will adversely affect the mileage.

Very well. I always follow some more tips given to me by some experienced pilots and I am using the same fuel for my two seater microlight aeroplane.:
      1. Always buy fuel from well established, clean and well maintained premises, old and reputed pumps, owned by rich people or big companies and having frequent local customers. No one can cheat locals and do well.
      2. Check the quantity of fuel remaining in the tanks of the gas station, displayed on a board outside the office. If almost empty or even half full, do not buy.It will have more of dirt and water.
      3. Try and buy early morning. Moisture and sediments would have condensed to the bottom as the fuel would be undisturbed in the late night and early morning hours (hardly any customers) and also you get more weight of fuel for the same volume. And the mileage depends upon weight of the fuel burnt and not volume.
      4. Last, talk to the owner and offer him a ride in your plane (if you have one). Then terrify him of the dangers of engine failure caused by bad fuel and watch for his reactions. I have caught one dishonest owner like that!

Very well done Suket. I wish if i had a plane , i would have given A REAL RIDE to all the petrol station owners here in India and lastly but not the least to ALL THE OIL MAFIA and I would have then posted the photographs of all their reactions. All these people should thank God that i do not have a plane ...... Any ways thanks Suket for showing me the way as to how to terrify these crooks. God bless you.

      really great tips.
i suggest few more tips to increase the mileage, low pollution, good engine life, trouble free suspension etc.
      SAFETY
TPMS is primarily a vehicle safety device. Improper tyre pressure can
lead to tyre bursts and consequently loss of vehicle control. In fact
according to estimates 250,000 accidents occur each year in the
United States alone due to low tyre pressure. With increasing speeds
on Indian Highways, accidents due to tyre bursts are on the rise. In
fact some high speed expressways in India are particularly notorious
for tyre bursts and related accidents.
      FUEL EFFICIENCY
TPMS enables you to improve your vehicles fuel efficiency. Maintaining
correct tyre pressure at all times is an important factor in optimizing
the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. As a thumb rule, it has been found
that for every 3 psi drop in tyre pressure, your fuel efficiency could
drop by 2-3%. Continental, the German tyre manufacturer, has found
that if all tyres on the road were correctly inflated, the savings would
amount to 700 million litres of fuel each year in the European Union
      alone!
      TYRE LIFE
The life of your tyres is significantly influenced by the pressure.
Incorrect tyre pressure can reduce your tyre life by as much as
50%! TyreProbe helps you to reduce your vehicle maintenance cost
by increasing your tyre life. Even a single set of tyres saved means
      big savings!
      PUNCTURE ALERTS
Tubeless tyres lose pressure slowly. TyreProbe can detect leakages of
air from your tyres thus ensuring that you are warned well in advance
before you get stranded with a flat.
      REDUCED EMISSIONS
Correct tyre pressure at all times means your vehicle burns less
fuel and hence generates lower emissions. TyreProbe helps you to
      contribute to saving the environment.
      COMFORT AND RIDE
The ride quality of your vehicle depends heavily on tyre pressure.
Correct tyre pressure means optimum ride quality and comfort.
      IMPROVED SUSPENSION LIFE
Improper tyre pressure can lead to early wearing out and failure of
the suspension elements of your vehicle. Correct tyre pressure at all
times means better suspension life and lower maintenance costs.
      TYREPROBE
      Wireless Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
      Tyre Pressure Monitoring
      System (TPMS)
TyreProbe is a state-of-the-art onboard electronic Tyre
Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) powered by direct
wireless tyre sensor technology. Once installed in your vehicle,
TyreProbe continuosly monitors the pressure and temperature
of your tyres in real-time and warns you audio-visually if the
pressure or temperature of your tyres is abnormal. TyreProbe
enhances your safety and helps to improve the fuel efficiency
and tyre life of your vehicle. It can also warn you of an
impending puncture. TPMS has been mandatory by National
Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the US for
all passenger cars manufactured in the United States with
effect from 1st September 2007 and is brought to you in India

//In fact according to estimates 250,000 accidents occur each year in the
United States alone due to low tyre pressure. With increasing speeds
on Indian Highways, accidents due to tyre bursts are on the rise. In
fact some high speed expressways in India are particularly notorious
for tyre bursts and related accidents.//

This is exactly a typical sales gimmick. What is relevance of USA data where most cars have above 2500cc engines and run at average higher speads, in India? Further what data can be presented to substantiate the claim that accidents are on rise due to wrong tyre pressure? Accident FIR are written by policemen who do not know anything about such matters and are most under-litterate nor research minded.

Don't try to eye wash the public with such claims.

Most of the accidents happen due to drunken / inebriated driving, lack of driving ethics (80% of the taxis, transport drivers do not have basic education and culture to follow any ethics or discipline on roads). Road sense and driving lessons should be given right from schools in India. Apart from these rich kids think roads are their family property.

None of the Lorries or even scooters or bikes will have rear lights working during night. This is the biggest danger. Truck drives leave stones on the middle of the road which they put behind their wheels. Driving at night without dimming is another reason. Pothholes, bumpers etc all count. Many of the Highways are built without putting proper banking at curves. I have seen some drive against the traffic to cut lanes on Superways, particulary in Tamilnadu, Andra & karnataka.

Have any of these reasons been systematically recorded and analysed before making such blant statements?

There is no doubt tyre pressure is the most important factor as far as fuel economy is concerned and lack of control or even accidents on highways. However it is not proper to generalize it.

        dear sir,
thx for ur valuable suggestions, we people first understand negative and thenafter some incident we think positive.
purely the article what i have send is to create the awareness reg. the tyre preassure how big role it plays.
        secondly what t the advantages
thirdly tyre burst in all vehicles 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers etcetc even cycle also with this engine cc is no way related.

        this paragraph u have mentioned:
Most of the accidents happen due to drunken / inebriated driving, lack of driving ethics (80% of the taxis, transport drivers do not have basic education and culture to follow any ethics or discipline on roads). Road sense and driving lessons should be given right from schools in India. Apart from these rich kids think roads are their family property.

pl. tell me how it is related to our topic.

reg the taxi drivers transport drivers dont know ethics i agree if we educated people wont follow how can u expect these people.
if any gadget introduced just think in positive and the the advantages and spread the good. do u find any think whorng in this article i have put the usa article y because most of the indian r not aware of this product and secondly i am trying to create awareness.
honestly u mentioned that due to low preassure tyre get butst but to my surprise due to high preassure also the tyre get butst.
for eg. in ur car say 5 members sitting and travelling for a second u think lot of weight in the car so i should put 2 or 3 psi more instead of 30 psi but u dont know what happen and what psi it reaches in tyre in running.

if u feel that it is eyewash then it is up to u
this information is for the people who really know the value of life, family children etc.

Consideriong that more and more models with "AUTO" transmission coming on road, it is important to monitor the Idling Engine RPM. Should be minimum required as per manufacturer's norms. Also DO NOT put the auto-transmission vehicle in "N" while waiting at signal. The idling RPM is higher in "N" than in "D". I have experienced that. Also watch the engine RPM meter. You should be around 2000RPM while driving at 70-80KMPH. This is again car-model dependent. But do keep an eye on RPM meter. It is provided with a purpose I suppose. Switch-off A/C while climbing up hills.Happy Driving !
      • Prakash 1 year 0 months ago
will AT have good fuel efficiency than MT?
      • Alhad 1 year 0 months ago
At least not bad as many imagine. The comfort is additional advantage. The relation between RPM and KMPH is important to get good fuel efficiency.
      • Biziw 1 year 0 months ago
Thanks, Alhad. That was useful advice for all users of Auto Transmission. 2000RPM at 70/80kmph is ideal and fuel efficient. I bet u, if you drive at a average speed of 70/80KMPH will save a lot of fuel. Also it is better to accelerate gradually when taking off and increase the level of acceleration as speed of the car increase. This greatly reduces fuel consumption.

With Manual transmission, it can be fuel efficient if only you are able to determine the right time to change the gear to the next level. If for instance you accelerate on a first gear from 0 - 50KMPH you are certainly wasting fuel. Most car manuals will tell you to change to second gear when your speed is 30KMPH, to second @ 50KMPH and by 70 to 80KMPH you should be on 4 or 5th gear. It all depends on the speed at which you are moving. If town driving, it is advisable to change gears at short intervals, rather than reving so hard before attempting to change to the next level. All the best

Since all the experts say keeping the car tyre inflated is the best solution for saving fuel. I would suggest all the car manufacturers to provide a standard tool or gadget to show the current car tyre inflation rate so the the owner knows when to pump air. This will save millions of litres of fuel around the world.

    • Homi  •  1 year 0 months ago
All these tips are ok but what about pathetic condition of our roads, namely potholes, even in metros. Then what about senselessly placed speed breakers (reas axle breakers). Also lack of road discipline adds to fuel consumption as it creates unnecessary jams.

Learn & practice driving a car without using the brakes at all ! Speed is best controlled by shifting gears than using brake. You will feel the difference in one full tank cycle.

Another imp aspect to improve on your fuel is to learn how to shift your gears at the appropriate speed, there by which not only increases your fuel capacity but also does not wear off your car's engine. In short learn to listen to your engine while driving, she may not speaking verbally, but she surly speaks audiably. Good luck Drivers!!

A few more ways to save fuel,as instructed by German Auto clubs:
Switch off the engine at road signals,if your battery is ok,also in trafic jam situations. You save upto
      4% of fuel.
Try to shift to higher gears,as soon as possible, and not wait for the car to pick up high speeds.
You save upto 5% of fuel.
While parking your car,try to park the car so that you move out forward instead of reversing.
One tends to press the accelarator more while reversing, especially with manual gear cars.
