He makes a valid point

I am a regular reader of Inner Voice and I too am a devotee of God and godliness, but I fail to understand the faith of most followers. For example most of us believe in a particular form of God because we want something in return.

Most devotees turn to temples because they believe their wish will come true from that particular deity. But what if God appeared in person and said that from now on He will not fulfill any personal wish? Will the same devotees continue their love and worship? We humans are so engrossed in give and take that we fail to look beyond our desires.

Many people join a religious trust thinking that they will be freed from all their sins, past, present and future. They merely feed their ego thinking they are true devotees simply by donating to a religious trust.

There are a lot of medical practitioners and lawyers who donate half their earnings to missionaries, but I fail to understand the purpose. Instead if they give better service to their patients and charge them once for every treatment or for each case I think God would be happier.

My father is an ardent follower of Sri Ramakrishna and he has spent most of his time neglecting us and whenever we complained, he cited "non-attachment". During my college days I used to be angry at his indifference and lack of interest in household affairs.

I failed to understand why a person could not be a householder as well as pursue devotion at the same time. Now I am 31 years of age and I pity him, because he keeps looking for God in temples but fails to see God in all of us and all around us! I too am an ardent devotee of Ma Kali and I feel immense pleasure simply standing before Her with folded hands.

Yet I believe karma is the best way to relate meaningfully with God. If you earn good karma your wishes are more likely to come true.
