POLICE HAVE arrested two students of Delhi University (DU) for allegedly robbing two women of their jewellery in north Delhi on Saturday. Police said the accused, both first timers to the world of crime, are final-year students at a west Delhi college and committed the crime to make extra money for their summer vacations.
One of them who sported long locks immediately got a haircut for fear of being identified. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in a residential colony in Roop Nagar when the two women, aged 45 and 27 years, were on their way to a nearby market.
The accused have been identified as Jarnail Singh (21) and Jagdish (20). They were final year students of BA at Rajdhani College in west Delhi.
"The two men who were on their motorcycle attacked one of the women from behind and beat her up. One of them snatched the victim's gold chain and sped on," said a senior police officer.
Police said the victim managed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle. She then called up the police control room (PCR).
The police traced the motorcycle to Nangloi in west Delhi. Investigations revealed the motorcycle belonged to one of the accused Jarnail Singh and was found parked outside his house.
"We arrested Jarnail and, on his disclosure, we reached the other accused Jagdish who lives in Inderlok area," said Devesh Chandra Srivastava, DCP (north). Police said that Jagdish who had long hair, went home and got a haircut as he feared being identified by the women.
The two college students told the police they were falling short of pocket money so they decided to try their hand at crime. The accused have been arrested and have been sent to judicial custody.
