British actress Elizabeth Hurley recently wore a low cut, body hugging black dress for an awards night in Berlin. The outfit brought back memories of a similar dress she wore to the premiere of the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, a good 14 years ago.
The Versace dress, held together by golden safety pins, was termed 'THAT DRESS'. It is not the first time a celebrity has donned an outfit that has been etched in the collective memory, strong enough to be referred as 'THAT DRESS'.
From Jennifer Lopez to Bj and #246;rk and from Mallika Sherawat to Aishwarya Bachchan, all have been the icons or victims of that dress. Latin pop sensation Jennifer Lopez wore a green Versace gown to the Grammy Awards in 2000.
Provocative would be an understatement for the gown that revealed almost everything. Says designer Nainika Karan, "It's good to see people dressing up or making bold statements at the Oscars or Grammy or any such award functions.
" Karan cites the example of Sharon Stone who wore her husband's white shirt to the Oscars in 1998 and "everybody stood up and took notice." Back home, Aishwarya Bachchan faced music from the critics when she wore an Armani gown to the premiere of one of her films in London in 2004.
A London Daily described her outfit as, "a Geisha girl with a poodle slung around her neck." Nonetheless, the dress went down in the sartorial list.
Many remember it as a dress that they would love to forget. A year later, Mallika Sherawat's white lehenga choli at the Cannes Film Festival left little to the imagination.
Dangerously low and high cuts left the onlookers hypnotised. The dress hogged print and channel space for a really long time.
Let's see which celebrity occupies a place in 'THAT DRESS' list next . In the meanwhile, are you wearing that dress today?.
