Maya: CBI harassing me on govt order

Sat, May 10 12:50 AM

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday approached the Supreme Court accusing the CBI of harassing her. Requesting the court to quash the FIR registered against her in a disproportionate assets case in 2003, Mayawati claimed the agency had exceeded its brief by registering the case.

She also sought de-freezing of her accounts that were seized by the CBI after the case. She alleged the CBI had been used by the Centre to secure political ends.

The probe, she said, was aimed at "character assassination" and disrupting her political career. Mayawati's writ petition comes days after the Delhi High Court issued a notice to her on the Centre's appeal against an order of the income tax appellate tribunal giving her a clean chit.

The CM's petition was mentioned before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K.G.

Balakrishan for early hearing. The bench, however, fixed it for routine hearing on May 15.

The case against Mayawati is an offshoot of the Taj corridor scam. Rs 1,618 cr relief package.

The court was on Friday informed about the Centre's proposal to prepare a package of Rs 1,618 crore for the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants. Appearing for the government, Solicitor General G.

E. Vahanvati said the package - covering housing, cash relief, scholarships employment and waiver of interest on loans - was ready and would be placed before the court.
