Mid-day meal's quality under MCD's scanner

Fri, May 9 01:05 AM

Mid-day meal served in the 1,800 primary schools of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has once again come under scrutiny. This time the leadership inside the civic agency is at loggerheads over the amount of food supplied by a single NGO.

The MCD's Standing Committee had made a sub-committee to keep a check on the quality and the quantity of food given in their schools. In a recent report the committee had stated that a single NGO should be allowed to supply food to 25,000 and 75,000 students.

This was stated after the committee felt that it was the only way to maintain the quality. But in a recent Standing Committee meeting a proposal was brought to give tender to a single NGO to provide food for 75,000-1,00,000 students.

The sub-committee objected to the tender and the proposal has been put in cold storage till the next meeting. The MCD had earlier decided to give tenders to only NGOs and not to private caterers.

Mahek Singh, the chairman of the committee said, "A single NGO cannot provide food to so many children. The quality is going to be compromised.

So we objected to the tender and sent it for a refer back." He added that the Midday Meal sub committee has time and again suggested that every zone should have an NGO responsible for providing meals so better quality food could be provided.
