The Delhi Traffic Police's campaign against jaywalking is in full swing, with culprits being nabbed at blitzkrieg speed. Though the Rs 20 fine may not seem like very much, one can never underestimate a Delhiite's underwhelming enthusiasm to pay up.
The good thing is it's leading to a lot of hilarity for traffic cops at the receiving end of inventive excuses. HT City finds out some of the funniest.
I need to 'go': There seems to be a sudden urge to use the urinal amongst those caught jaywalking, with people using that as an excuse to justify their scurry across traffic. "Many of them forge an expression of urgency, asking us to excuse them just this one time," says a cop at CP.
My wife is giving birth: There's been a sudden surge in the number of wives who are in the midst of labour pains. Obviously there's no choice for the fathers-to-be but to break traffic rules.
I am not from Delhi: There's a quick transformation to another nationality, accompanied by accents that would put Salman Khan to shame. Why? "How can we be expected to know the rules when we aren't even from this city?" Mehar, a DU student, who tried pulling that says ruefully: "The cops are smarter than that".
You didn't catch him! Some won't go down alone. They will point fingers at everyone in sight and scream 'injustice'.
As one cop says, "Some will charge the world rather than admit their fault." No money: "You can see them wearing expensive clothes," complains a cop, "And they claim they don't have Rs 20 in their pockets to pay the fine.
