Father kills teenaged daughter, her boyfriend

THE UTTARAKHAND Police have arrested a 46-year-old person early on Tuesday morning on charges of killing his teenaged daughter and her boyfriend. Ashok Kumar Sonkar was arrested when he surrendered before the police after committing the murders on the wee hours of Tuesday at his Indra Colony residence in the state capital.

According to the police, the accused has confessed to killing both the victims single-handedly after discovering them in a compromising position inside a bathroom. "The accused reached our police post around 5:00 am and stated that he had killed his daughter Pinki (16) and Manish (20) at his home around 3:00 am," said Girish Sharma, in-charge Dhara Police Post.

When the police along with Sonkar reached the crime scene, they found bodies of both victims lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom. Manish's neck bore strangulation marks and had head injuries while Pinki's neck was slit open with a sharp object.

"Sonkar says that when he found the duo inside the bathroom, he held the boy's neck and banged his head on the wall till he died and later cut his daughter's throat with a knife in a fit of rage," said Sharma. Both the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and Sonkar placed under arrest.

The police have also detained several relatives of both the victims for questioning. Primary investigation has revealed that Pinki, a student of Class X, was having an affair with her neighbour Manish (who also happened to be a close relative from her father's side) despite stiff opposition from both the families.

Although Sonkar claims to have killed both his daughter and her boyfriend without anyone's help, the police are trying to ascertain if any other family member had aided him.While honour killings take place frequently in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, this is the first major crime of that nature in Uttarakhand's capital.
