IN THE fifth incident of human killing by the man-eater leopard in the region, a woman was killed when the killer leopard stormed a hutment in Rehua village, nearly 7 kms away from Khamariya town on the PB road late last night. Sixty-five year old Phool Kumari was asleep when the leopard struck.
The leopard dragged her to an orchard outside the village and ate up almost half of her body. Earlier, the errant animal had killed a 10-year boy Keshav in Semrahana on Jan 27, a mentally retarded woman in Bhauvapur on the intervening night of March 13-14, a 12-year girl Sakrun in Jethra on the intervening night of April 23-24 and a 26-year married woman Rama Devi near Chaura village on April 24 besides attacking two persons and killing over a dozen pets in the region.
The incident has rocked the forest authorities, who had to drop their tranquilization operation midway on April 29 even after locating and containing the leopard in a dense orchard near Chaura village as no written orders from the state wildlife authorities were received by then. Also, the wildlife activists including the former union minister Maneka Gandhi opposed any move that could pose any threat to leopard's life.
