Munch crunch

Sun, May 4 12:35 AM

The hard-hitting reality of the ongoing global food crisis has hit our wallets, and students in the city are feeling the pinch. The price of McDonald's Chicken McGrill has been hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 30.

The price of 'Sub of the Day' at Subway has gone up from Rs 50 to Rs 60, while there's been a nominal increase in the prices of Domino's pizzas. Pizza Hut and some coffee houses, too, will soon go for a hike in prices.

These hikes may not be a jolt to many, but it's huge for students with fixed pocket money. BBA student Vinamr Cheemra is saddened; his diet plan has gone haywire because of Subway's price hike.

He says, "My friends and I wanted to lose a few kgs and for that we would eat from Subway. But now we have to spend Rs 50 extra every week.

" It's not only Vinamr but also engineering student Sudeep Gangopdhay who's left hungry. "Recently, when I ordered a Chicken McGrill and I was surprised to know that the Baap ke Zaamane ka price is no longer there.

And their burger also seemed smaller. I ended up ordering two burgers for Rs 60, which didn't even satisfy my hunger.

" It's no news that inflation has taken a toll on everybody, and this revision of prices in fast food chains was inevitable too. Says McDonald's India spokesperson, "We keep our ears close to the ground for emerging trends, including inflation.

And any decision is not an ad-hoc reaction, but a well-researched one." Domino's shares the view.

Dev Amritesh, VP marketing, Domino's, says, "The rise in prices is due to the rise in input cost, which is obviously because of inflation and global food crisis. But still we have managed to keep the hike in prices marginal.

" Rini Dutta, VP, marketing and product development, Barista Coffee Company, says, "Coffee prices have risen significantly. We are waiting for the situation to stabilise before taking any pricing decision of our products.
