Not wanting people to queue up at Municipal Corporation of Delhi offices to file property tax, the civic body is planning to make online tax payment scheme mandatory for all from next month. Not only this, action will be taken against those who fail to use the online system for filing returns.
The MCD had made a similar announcement last year, but the scheme had remained on paper. "We will make online tax payment scheme mandatory from April 1.
Earlier, we were not able to provide all the details needed to fill property tax online and hence we had not made it mandatory. Now our online system has all the details and people should use it.
It is simpler to use and action will be taken against those who fail to do so," said A.K.
Ambasht, assessor and collector in the Property Tax department of MCD. To make sure those who are not net savvy can use the system for filing returns, the MCD will tie up with a company called ITZ Cash.
The company will set up computers for filing tax returns online. Nearly 1,000 such outlets are going to be started by the civic body.
"We will provide training to the staff of the company so that they can help people in filing returns. The training is going to start from tomorrow," said Ambasht.
This year, the MCD has collected a total of 852 crore in property tax till 1 March. Last year, it had collected Rs.
711.48 crore.
It is hoping to collect property tax to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore this year. "We are hoping to collect tax worth Rs 93 crore from Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and from the Delhi Development Authority too.
We would make it compulsory to pay property tax online as it would help reduce the long queues," said Vijendra Gupta, chairman of the Standing Committee in MCD. Ever since the unit area system of property tax collection has come into existence in 2004, the MCD has brought out a new property tax return form every year.
According to the MCD, there are a total of eight lakh taxpayers in the Capital.
