Mumbai no stranger to organ trade

As many as three international kidney transplant at rackets have been busted by the Mumbai police in the past 13 years. The first case was in 1994 in which Dr.

Santosh Rameshwar Raut aka Dr. Amit Kumar figured as the kingpin.

The second international kidney racket was busted in one of Mumbai's most reputed Hospitals, the Bombay Hospital. Well-known nephrologist Dr S.P. Trivedi was arrested in January 2004 for conducting as many as 70 such illegal operations by forging documents to prove the donor's relation with the recipients.

In the third and most recent expose, the crime branch nabbed renowned Chennai-based nephrologist Dr. Pillani Ravichandran.

His gang of four agents were nabbed from Mumbai-Gujarat and Chennai in September-October 2007. The crime branch has so far traced records of at least 760 illegal transplantations conducted by Dr.

Ravichandran since 2002. The chargesheet in the case was submitted on November 2 while two more accused in the case are still absconding.

Dr. Ravichandran, who used to charge between Rs.

20-25 lakh for every transplantation, is believed to have earned over Rs. 500 crore from his business.

Police said Ravichandran was conducting the illegal transplantations for his overseas clients.
