Hazare movement is destabilising for nation: Sociologist

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) The anti-corruption campaign by Anna Hazare and his followers is a social churning whose effects would be destabilising for the country that is already in a 'very fragile, destabilised state', feels leading sociologist Andre Beteille.

But the Hazare movement is also beneficial in that it has made people speak out about corruption, he added.

'We can't afford to further destabilise the country. I would not like to throw my weight behind a movement that is destabilising a state which is already in a very fragile - destabilised - state,' Andre Beteille said here Friday evening.

Quoting modern social analysts, Beteille said, 'what passes for social movements in civil society are of amorphous nature. I don't regard this social movement as the voice of the Indian civil society at all,' the sociologist, who has inspired generations of thinkers in the country, said.

He said 'the civil societies contain certain institutions which lays down certain conditions for democracy'.

'The concept of a civil society can be problematic, it can be misused...' Beteille said in the context of the ongoing anti-corruption agaitation in the country.

Beteille, honoured with the Padma Bhushan, is known for his studies of the caste system in south India.

His book, 'Caste, Class and Power' first published in 1965 is considered a classic in Indian sociology. Based on his doctoral thesis, the book illustrates the process by which modernity transformed a traditional village with a caste-based social structure to one based more on political parties or panchayats.

      Dear Mr. Andre Beteille,
Lets assume that you may be correct, but any other options to eradicate corruption tell me, instead Anna I will follow you. At one end Farmers are dying, crops are rotting, people struggling there, on the other side, Politicians mending crores of rupees. Being awarded Padma Bhusan Why haven't you come up with any useful suggestions.
Please allow to happen some goods things in India.

Well how about team anna contesting elections?
      • Srinivas 9 months ago
Dear Kote, you have raised a very valid question. What is the solution...? The solution is changing the whole system. In the present political system no political party can give corruption free government. What Anna is doing a good thing by highlighting the issue. The solution what I feel is - this is the right time - anna should start a All India Institute and train 524 good leaders like him, who are sincere, simple and hardworking and field in the next parliament elections. I am sure the public will vote sincere candidates and good people will come into parliament. When good people will be in parliament, we can expect good governance. Hence I sincerely request Anna to start such an institute and train good quality leaders with a vision and field in the next elections.

Andre Beteille: To hell with you. You & other like minded people abetted corruption in India for 60 odd years post independence.
God give Anna the strength so that he achives his goals

I agree, Andre Beteille is a beneficiary of the status quo system, no wonder he feels threatened with public disgust with the currupt indian state.

Raj corruption is not only taking and giving money. I don't know much about you and don't know you ever did anything illigal in the life or not but one thing i want to say that first we need to understand that where the corruption happned and why it is happend. if you deeply study it you would find that wherever people find themselves are benificiary, they incorporate in corruption and than abuse the system. If only those people of india who come up with Anna on the streat and his supporter on internet determine that they would never take benifit at the rate of corruption. i m sure coruuption would definatly be lessened otherwise no law can prevent it .

Indians are sentimental fool when it comes to think pragmatically..corruption has range of forms and here it has been portraying that govt officials and politicians are only corrupt, in reality 99.9% of people offer bribe to get their things done in private domain. law cant address all, moreover its a social problem.

      Dear Mr. Andre Beteille,
We disagree with you.Kalmadi,Kani and Raja are in Tihar for their charges of corruption. Anna is against corruption and the Govt is disrespecting by arresting and treating on par with the above three. For both corruption and anti corruption jail is not the treatment !! What the govt is doing !!

Dr.Singh ,realize this grave mistake ,come out of the shell, show the real of you.Pass Jan lokpal with one voice. If necessary ,amendments can be made afterwards.First save Anna and the country. You will not get another chance to show the real of you. This is right time for you with no Madam's presence and pressure. You need not listen to any body.
      Last Chance !!!!
      Very good Last Chance ????
Never get for a life time Chance !?!?!?

      Dear Beteille,
I think u have not thought over the present scenario and its future consequences. If u want to have a real democratic environment u have to clean the corrupt system, for which u must start cleaning from the top most level. Then only u can clean the bottom. The top most level is infected by the corrupt politicians and the bureaucrats. So Anna's efforts will not be destabilizing the nation . But of course it might be destabilizing certain party or corrupt people.

"The anti-corruption campaign by Anna Hazare and his followers is a social churning whose effects would be destabilising for the country that is already in a 'very fragile, destabilised state', feels leading sociologist Andre Beteille."
Emphatic No. On the contrary he is uniting the Nation. Anna is truly a 'Bharatha Ratna'. It is unfortunate that some semi educated in political and social sciences write some thesis in a hatch patch way (because there is no QED in Humanitics unlike mathematics), use their influence with persons that matter and come into currency as 'learned doctorates'.
Indian state looks fragile-not the Nation because a selfless single Anna can unite people from length and breadth of the Nation- and, state looks fragile because - 'There cannot be a solution to a political problem other than political and politics is affairs of the working state. State is born out of Social interactions to protect and advance the Society. There will be turmoil if interest of the state and Society are in conflict and ensuing political adjustment results in restructuring the State machinery. Bane of the Indian Polity is " We the People of India" drafted and adopted a polity of a highly advanced and conservative British society in a hatch patch manner, without preparing our society and retained the imperialistic tenets of divide and rule with maximum profit to the ruling class as a policy structured in our 'Constitution' in a situation created by the ruling British while they were forced to leave. Instead, let 1) the Zilla Parishad [the District council] chairmen be the Members of the Loksabha [the lower house] which introduces right to recall concept in the Polity if his actions go against the interests of peoples progress and, their membership will be a unifying force for the progress of the region instead of dividing to fight for the spoils of state. Let 2) the State Bar council chairmen be the Members of the Rajyasabha [upper House of the Parliament] with a rider that he be practicing Law at least for ten years in Trial courts, five years in Session courts and three years in the state high court and, they shall also be members of jury in the Supreme court. This introduces knowledge and Experience in solving people’s woes which will be handy in bringing up laws for the social progress.

there are sufficient legislation to tackle corruption which are not being used effectively and instead we are beating around the bush with anna what a pity
      • Telangana_friend 9 months ago
But do you know that it is the politicians who have not allowed the legislations to takcle corruption in its spirit. hence an independent authority. Alternatively give the CVC investigative powers or let the CBI be merged with CVC so that corruption can be effectively tackled. Do you what is the progress in the case of fodder scam, the disproportionate assets case etc being tried under the existing system

We don't want this development or high growth rate in words of economist on the cost of our social values. Your development or high growth rate is not beneficial for those who are struggling for their DO JOON KI ROTI. Inspite of good agricultural produce inflation is at its peak only and only due to the black money in circulation. Corruption has increased the gap between haves and haves not. This gap is vary dangerous for a society, please understand this basic issue. If this gap is not reduced the day is not far when haves not will start looting haves i.e.the start of civil war. Please be Indian, save India, support the fight against corruption. Stop corruption, feel proud to be Indian. Jai hind

The menace of corruption is a social creation and all of us are equally responsible. Basically, I want to ask all my countrymen why are we giving bribe at all to anyone who may demand for it. Why can't we have the courage to ask him to go to hell. Basically at times either we are scared or become more greedy to jumb the queue. So, we create a corrupt official and next day we blame for corruption. I have crossed 60 years of age. My two kids have been given best education. But, I have in my life never ever given a single paise as bribe to anyone. Once a police inspector wanted bribe money for giving good report on my passport verification. I asked him to do whatever he wants. You won't believe I got my passport by post in the next ten days. Not only Annaji, but each one of us should show courage and conviction. Why can't all Annaji supporters also go on fasting with him instead of falling prey before Anna's lungar like hungry fox. Shameful.

It is important to realize that every system and society evolves to find solutions to its own problems. The fight against corruption by Team Anna is a unique experiment in post independent India. No theory or model can explain reality or predict future. A theory is just an opinion that is believed by a bunch of people. If eventually Anna's experiment becomes a problem for India, she will also find a way to solve it. On the other hand assume it solves the problem then there will hundreds of theories to explain why it is so successful. So don't give much credit to theories anyways! There need not be any worry or anxiety because of Anna's movement. Making Government accountable for corruption is the main aim of this movement. If Govt cannot act against corruption who else can? Since the govt is not acting the society is responding to it! People of India are coming together for the first time in post independent India! That is enough reason to celebrate!! Enough reason to support the movement!!

Very true Mr.Raghavan , now we need to ignore people those who are trying to demotivate Mr.Anna’s movement, and we need to support him as much as possible.
      • Muthu 9 months ago
True, this is the first time i see Indian people showing unity irrespective of caste, creed and color. Almost every indian would have faced corruption numerous times. But we just crib and forget.
And coming back to the bill, we all know about the netas. They would have never drafted the bill in the first place.
It was only after Anna's first anti-corruption campaign, after series of scams like Adarsh, 2G, CWG, Govt was forced to talk about this lokpal bill.
With this situation, how can we expect the Govt. to present their version of bill in the parliament and pass it.
And it is obvious that all the political parties in the country will unanimously join together and pass this Govt's version of weaker lokpal bill.
So this is hi time to support Mr. Anna Hazare.

I am with this Article. I am not in support of any stubborn individual who is fasting like a child.

I think corruption is much broader than what people are thinking. Its funny when people are talking about taking back the black money and the same people are giving 100 rs. note to a Traffic policeman to avoid a ticket.
I think there are many other big problems in India than corruption and taking back the Black money.

We should first fight against ourselves instead of fighting against Government. I don't understand one thing on one side Anna is saying that he is against corruption not against any party and on the other hand he says Congress is corrupt. I think its a move to get fame and shake the govt. I think if we won't stop giving bribes then nobody will stop taking it and guess what we are fighting for to stop other s taking bribe. Why don't we stop giving it first.

Guys this is my own thinking and I don't want to hurt your feelings. If you have the right to speak so am I.

This is not a childish demeanor from someone who has been awarded Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and many more by the government itself. There is big reason for doing this at this age with no personal greed. I personally think that you have a wealthy background. Hence, you're not thinking like an Indian citizen who goes through which we can't even imagine of sitting here. The followers of Anna Hazare, have a great reputation and intelligence as well. People like Arvind kejriwal and Kiran Bedi are definitely not Child sir, they have done enough more than you and me to get acknowledgement from everywhere including the corrupted government. When you know system is corrupted and you can't do nothing why not let somebody else take an initiative.

If u realy believe gita kindly go to the sloka 4.07-08 that mantion which i m also believe that

yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata
      abhyutthanam adharmasya tada’tmanaang srajamyaham

      paritranya sadhunang vinasaya ca duskritam
      dharma sangthapanarthaya sangbhavami yuge yuge

Whenever there is a decline of Dharma (Righteousness) and a
predominance of Adharma (Unrighteousness), O Arjuna, then
I manifest Myself. I appear from time to time for protecting
the good, for transforming the wicked, and for establishing
world order (Dharma). (See also TR 1.120.03-04) (4.07-08)

      in explaination it say that

The Supreme Being (Para-Brahma) is both
transcendent (or divine) and immanent (or human) (AV 4.16.08).
Prophets appear from time to time as divine dispensation sees the
need for the welfare of the society. Whenever miscreants are born to
destroy world order (Dharma), the good Lord incarnates to put
everything in proper balance (VR 7.08.27). His compassion is the
main reason for Lord’s incarnation (SBS 49). There are other
reasons, besides the protection of righteousness (Dharma), for the
Lord’s incarnation. The Eternal Being (Brahma), which is beyond
birth and death, incarnates in human form through a great soul on
earth to satisfy the longings of devotees who want to see Him and be
in His personal presence. Saint Tulas$d|sa said: Though devoid of
material attributes, unattached, and immutable; yet for the love of his votaries the Lord assumes a form with attributes (TR 2.218.03).
R|mak&^[a said that he would live in a subtle body for three hundred
years in the hearts and minds of his devotees. Yog|nanda said: So
long as people in this world are crying for help, I shall return to ply
my boat and offer to take them to heavenly shores.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT MAKE IT COMMUNAL IT IS NOT DEPAND ON GITA BUT IT EFFECT U THE FUTURE INDIANS, NO MATTER WHETHER U R HUNDU, MUSLIM, CHRISTAN, SIKH IT ONLY ASK DO U HAVE A SELF EGO OR FOLLOW SOME OTHER'S EGO????????????
