Gulabi Bagh SHO accused of cheating NRI man's mother

New Delhi, Aug. 3 -- The station house officer (SHO) of Gulabi Bagh police station has been accused of cheating an Ireland-based nonresident Indian (NRI) of more than R25 lakh in collusion with the victim's own relatives.

The relatives were allegedly bleeding the victim's mother of her life savings and misusing her name to stash the police officer's "illegal income" in 'faux' bank accounts, Delhi police said on Wednesday.

The case, registered in outer Delhi's Mongolpuri, is against Sajjan Singh Yadav, who currently heads the police station in north Delhi.

"The case is being investigated," said BS Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer). A senior officer from the north district also confirmed that a criminal case had been registered.

Police said the case was registered on Sunday when the complainant, Amit Chaturvedi, son of a retired Indian Air Force officer and a resident of Pitampura's A block, alleged that SHO Yadav had colluded with three-four of his relatives in "coaxing" his mother into selling the property registered in her name.

Chaturvedi, who had left the country in 2004 to pursue his studies at Belfast before settling down there, also claimed that the accused SHO had even persuaded his 'illiterate' mother into opening three bank accounts opened jointly in their names at different banks.

"The SHO used to deposit illegal money earned by him through bribery and other illegal means in these accounts without the knowledge of my mother," Chaturvedi has alleged in his complaint.

According to police, Chaturvedi claimed to have stumbled upon the plot when his mother Krishna Chaturvedi passed away at the Army Base Hospital, located in the Delhi Cantonment area, on April 27.

"After performing her last rites, I asked my relative to hand over the key to one of the lockers that was in my mother's name. I saw that it was devoid of the jewellery supposed to be in it except for just R9,700 in cash," Chaturvedi further alleged.

The accused SHO has been booked for forgery and criminal breach of trust. Investigations are underway.
