Government asks AG branch to correct Gen Singh's DoB

New Delhi, Jan 29 (ANI): In a letter written to the Adjutant General's (AG) branch of the Army, the Defence Ministry has asked the branch to correct their record and show the year of birth of Army chief General V K Singh as 1950 and not 1951, as claimed by him.

According to sources, the letter was issued to the AG's branch a week ago to correct its record and show May 10, 1950 as Gen Singh's date of birth.

The AG's branch, which is the official record keeper in the service, has maintained Gen Singh's date of birth as May 10, 1951, although the Military Secretary's branch records it as May 10, 1950.

The move appears to be to reconcile the two dates in Army records prior to the hearing in the Supreme Court on February 3 regarding the issue.

Singh had moved the Supreme Court on January 16 after his statutory complaint on December 30 last year, challenging the government's stand on his date of birth, was rejected.

The controversy stemmed from different sets of records in the Adjutant General and Military Secretary branches of the Indian Army Headquarters.

While the Adjutant General's branch that deals with pay, perks and pensions maintains 1951 as his year of birth, the Military Secretary branch that deals with appointments and promotions has 1950 in its records.

According to reports, General Singh has been conveyed that that he will have to retire from service on May 31, 2012 on completion of his two-year tenure.

General Singh, who has consistently claimed that he was born in 1951 and not 1950 as maintained, had in his statutory complaint asked the Defence Ministry to consider May 10, 1951 as his date of birth.

The Army Chief had earlier filed the statutory complaint with Defence Minister A. K. Antony after the government issued an order on July 21 in which it said that it will consider May 10, 1950 as his date of birth. (ANI)

It is redicuous for the Government of India (Ministry of Defence) to ask Adjutant General Branch to change the date of Birth of General VK Singh. For change of D of B , AG Branch need proof. Since proof is Matriculate Certificate issued based on Hospital record, it cant be changed just by an order of Goverment without any proof. Just to favour a sikh gentlemen to become next Chief of Army Staff, PM, Defence Minister and Government machinery is trying to burry the truth and playing with the service norms. I request Government to honestly admit their mistake and let the system select Army Chiefs based on just merit rather than political or relegious or any other conisderations.

If someone is to be believed in this contry it is certainly not politicians it is only Army. Also if Govt. promoted General as Chief of Staff it is only on faith that he will ensure safety of this country then why not trust what he says his birth date is. What a stupid fight?

These Italian mafia Congress rulers don't even appear to care for the courts. They have become national liabilities and ruined whatever they touched. The age issue is in court. If courts are functional, SC should punish the DM, DS and others concerned for contempt of court.

When the matter is now in court, how does the government dare to change the DOB. Does it not amount to comtempt of court or manipulation of documents before court.

The impression was that this fellow Anthony was an honest fellow and so, will he be with his dealings in various matters
His asking the Army Ag to adjust the DOB of V. K. Singh smacks of dishonesty
especially when the matter is pending in the Apex court.
So honesty ends where his nose ends!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Many Indians who are more than 50 years old now, are not sure about their exact birth dates. However, in this case, the primary school records should take precedence over all other records. He was a minor when the application for NDA was filled. Would anyone have deliberately changed the date from that of the school records? Obviously it is a mistake. If the Chief of the Army should not make a mistake, or if he has deliberately changed records, is the punishment to keep him in service for a certain period? The Government has goofed up big time.

Guys......plz chill. On becoming the Army Chief he said that he will improve the internal health of the organisation. He did...only in selected cases...Aadarsh and Sukhna to sort out his rival camp. Other than this he has visibly not done anything. He seems to be wishing to improve his own health by eating free rations for one more year. Cheers to the MoD...

The Italian mafia has taken over everything in our country, even the army is not been spared.I am sure the General, beaning a man of honur and integrity might have refused to indulge in any from of sycophancy, hence he is paying the price.

      AUM.
What a shame the ministers and officers of Govt of India do not follow law of the land. The case filed by COAS in the Suoreme court of India awaits judgement and if there is just one per cent chance of its success, the MoD should concede the points raised by Gen Singh. No one will gain if the case drags on; the country,Bharat, will lose.

How can this Congress government order changes in military records when the matter is sub-judice? The Supreme Court must take into account this shameless government's current move in making its decision.

It's a pathetic case, made worse by Government. Matriculation certificate is the most sacred piece of paper for a proof of date. Why nobody asked for the certificate right within 2 years of Mr. VKSingh service is a mystery. I pity Mr. Anthony. Once again PM is a free bird, a sadhu.

I respect the General's request. But this sort of thing should have been sorted out when he was a Lt/Capt or Major. Why now after becoming the COAS ? To the common man, it appears as a case of "KIssa Kurci Ka". The BABU's never treated Soldier, like a Soldier. They can just change anyway they want. It's Unfortunate, but I feel the General should Win and Gracefully Step down to pave way for Senior Generals in line to be the COAS.

Lieutenant General Bikram Singh, will likely succeed as the army chief if General V k Singh retires according to the 1950 date. If 1951 is considered General Bikram Singh will be deprived of opportunity of becoming the Army Chief, as he is due to retire next year
