Kokrajhar, Oct. 2: Twelve jawans of the 16th batallion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), accused of gangraping a physically challenged woman at No. 1 Sonapur near Saralpara in Kokrajhar district on September 10 last year, were today paraded before the victim at Kokrajhar police station for identification.
According to the victim and her husband, they could identify 10 of the jawans who were in the group, of which two had committed the crime.
The development is a significant one before the hearing at Gauhati High Court on Monday.
The deaf-and-mute woman, in her mid-thirties, was fast asleep when a group of people, in uniform and carrying guns, stormed the hut and raped her. She was then taken outside and raped again.
She was found around 10 metres from her hut by villagers who rushed out on hearing the cries of the husband.
Her physically challenged husband was also assa -ulted.
The incident evoked wide reaction from the civil societies and NGOs, which are trying hard to get the victim justice and even approached the high court.
Police officials investigating the case refused to comment on the matter. The SSB officials were also unavailable for comment.
