London, July 30 (ANI): In an effort to help police curb crime, spy cameras are to be installed in a sleepy market town in Britain, which will track every vehicle entering and leaving the area, but to the distress of the local residents.
All seven routes in and out of Royston, Herts, are covered by the ANPR - automated number plate recognition - system.
Surveillance cameras costing 14,500 pounds each are due to be switched on in the next few days.
They will alert police to vehicles that are uninsured, untaxed or suspected of involvement in crime. ut, local residents who fear the system is an invasion of privacy have formed Royston Against ANPR - supported by national watchdog groups.
"We are on a slippery slope where everything we do will be monitored," the Sun quoted Former mayor Rod Kennedy as saying.
Daniel Hamilton, director of Big Brother Watch, added: "These digital checkpoints have no place in our liberal, democratic society." (ANI)
