Patna, Feb. 22: Innovations and steps taken by the state government to enhance the quality of elementary education were the theme of a two-day workshop that started at Chandragupt Institute of Management, Patna, today.
Christened "Innovation for Quality Education, Sanitation Health and Hygiene", the event has been organised by the education department along with the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad stressed on reforms in the education sector.
The workshop is an attempt to share innovations in the field of education and participants discussed ways to improve elementary education.
Inaugurating the workshop, education department principal secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said: "The workshop is in direction by state government on ways to improve elementary education. Delegates participating in the workshop will present their views on how to improve education and if required, the state government will implement such recommendations." Singh added that in the past few years, various innovative steps taken by Tamil Nadu and Kerala have contributed a lot towards improving the quality of education.
The education department principal secretary also spoke on various initiatives taken by the state government in providing quality education to students. A newly launched scheme, "Samjhe Sikhen", under which teachers in government schools will have to keep an assessment record of students on a regular basis, would require teachers to prepare a portfolio of students based on such assessments.
The education department, Bihar Education Project Council and Unicef are jointly running the programme. The main features of the programme include making schools operational, increasing learning capability of students, strengthening academic support and involving parents and guardians in collecting feedback on their wards.
As part of the Samjhe Sikhen programme launched on September 5 last year, the chief minister directed all teachers in the state, encouraging them to ensure quality education.
D. Chakrapani, the director of Centre for Innovations in Public Systems, Hyderabad, said: "In Andhra Pradesh, the state government has launched a mobile van teaching science, which is generating considerable interest among students."
The van has pictorial representation on various aspects of science. Moreover, students of rural schools, which do not have laboratories, attend practical classes in such mobile vans."
The speakers at the event also stressed on providing education to weaker sections of society, particularly the SC/STs.
