Twelve army soldiers killed in Kashmir avalanches

Srinagar, Feb 23 (IANS) Twelve Indian Army troopers were killed in two north Kashmir avalanches overnight in Bandipora and Ganderbal districts, an army official said Thursday.

Lt. Col. J.S. Brar, spokesman of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, told IANS: "Eight army troopers were killed and eight are still missing, 13 have been rescued from the avalanche that struck the brigade headquarters in Dawar village of Gurez (109 km from here) subdivision of Bandipora Wednesday night."

"Operations are still on to rescue the eight buried under the avalance," he said.

"Three troopers of the Territorial Army, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed in another avalanche that struck an army camp late Wednesday night in Sonmarg resort in Ganderbal, 87 km from srinagar," he added.

In the third avalanche, more than dozen hutments in Ramwari area of Ganerbal district during the night, but no loss of life occurred in the incident.

The area is inhabited by nomadic goatherds during the summer as they take their flock of sheep and goats for grazing.

Only last week, a major disaster was averted in Ganderbal district as a massive avalanche blocked the passage of water in the Sindh stream that flows to the middle of Sonamarg tourist resort.

As the authorities prepared for controlled blasting of the avalanche with the army's help to avoid glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF), which could cause a major disaster in the low lying areas of Ganderbal district, accumulated water finally managed to find its way cutting through the avalanche.

avalanches are not easily predictable as earthquake and floods. myself a soldier served in that part of the country for long years faced this difficulty and death of my collegues. politicians and natural calamity predicting authorities can do nothing about it.

There is already a National Disaster Management Agency. It cannot be expected to avert every single disaster. Its aim is to minimize loss of life and property in the event of natural disasters. The brave soldiers died because of the need to protect borders from hostile neighbours. Will the future "janata ki sarkar" leave the borders unprotected?

may their soul rest in peace. But the sad part is their family will now get peanuts ( half of the last salary drawn). how will the departed jawans children and familiy live now on. Why can't govt double/ triple the last drawn salary for personnle dying in harness. Forget the rest, this is the least we can do as a country. jai hind.

So Heart breaking.. Army personnel are the real jewel of the country. Losing them is just like losing a family member. May God rest their soul in peace and give their family strength to bear this irreparable loss to them and Nation.

Rahul Gandhi whose real name is RAUL VINCI is busy criticizing Indian politicians & asking for votes .Why cant' he go to Sri nagar for the protection of our Indian army& show his care & affection for poor people there? He has no right to criticize Indian politician as he is not an Indian citizen,as he has not given up his ITALIAN citizenship.

I'm not a big supporter of Rahul Gandhi but i can't understand why exactly "only" he is supposed to go to Sri Nagar to rescue people? He isin't the only one asking for votes!

My point exactly!!!! i could not understand the need of the above comment in this context. Are we left with nothing else in the world but to criticize the politicians... even if they have NOTHING to do with the happening???? Strange!!!
