New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) An 82-year-old woman was found smothered to death inside her residence here early Wednesday, Delhi Police said.
Joginder Kaur, resident of Vikaspuri in west Delhi, was found dead in her first floor flat around 5.30 a.m.
"She was lying on the floor near her bed. It seems that she was smothered with a pillow that was found near her. Some marks on her body lead us to believe that she was also manhandled," Additional Commissioner of Police, V. Renganathan told IANS.
Kaur was living alone on the first floor of the three-storey building, which had her relatives staying on the second and ground floors.
Kaur, whose husband Shobha Singh died 35 years ago, was staying in the house of her daughter who lives in London.
In the morning, around 4 a.m., when her cousin, Gurbaksh Singh, who lives on the ground floor, tried to open his gate it was found locked from outside.
"He called Kaur on the phone to open his gate, but she did not respond. After that he called his relative, Gagandeep Singh, who lives on the second floor of the house. Gagandeep also found his door locked from outside," said Renganathan.
Renganathan said that Gurbaksh came out of his flat from the back door and went to Kaur's flat where she was found dead.
"Prima facie it seems that robbery might be the motive behind the incident as the victim's room was ransacked," added Renganathan.
