EC to act on Khurshid after hearing from PM

New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) Even as Law Minister Salman Khurshid "bowed" to the "wisdom" of the Election Commission and regretted his remarks on sub-quota for backward sections of minorities in Uttar Pradesh, the case will be decided only after word from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, highly placed sources in the poll panel said.

"The fact is the Election Commission censured Khurshid for his speech. It then formally wrote to the president and the president forwarded the complaint to the prime minister," a senior official privy to the developments said.

"It is only prudent that the Election Commission will wait to see what the prime minister has to say," the official told IANS, adding: "So far the commission has not heard from the prime minister."

"I treat this matter as unfortunate and regret the statement. I bow to the wisdom of the Election Commission and remain personally committed to ensure that such situations do not arise," Khurshid said in a letter sent to the Election Commission Monday and released by the panel Tuesday.

Congress circles have been hoping that the commission may treat the issue as closed following Khurshid's letter, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued its demand that Khurshid be sacked.

"Just a regret should not be accepted. Either he (Khurshid) should apologise to the people and the commission for making misleading promises and provocative statements or he should be sacked," Balbir K. Punj, spokesperson of the BJP told reporters.

Khurshid said in his letter: "It was never been my intention to transgress the law or the model code of conduct. I have great respect for the commission and the decisions it takes and has taken."

"As responsible citizens of this country, it is our obligation to promote the spirit of law, its adherence and enforcement."

"This is the ethos on which I have woven my entire life and am committed to the Election Commission's effort towards the conduct of a free and fair election process," the letter said.

Stating that he "feels disturbed with the developments arising out of one of my statements made in the course of the election campaign," Khurshid said: "It has also caused me equal measure of sadness."

The Election Commission had censured Khurshid for his speech regarding nine percent job quotas for minorities. He was addressing a poll meeting at Farrukhabad, where his wife Louise Khurshid, is the Congress candidate in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

Even after the commission, following complaints from the opposition parties, censured Khurshid for the speech, the minister stood by the statement and said he was ready to be hanged for it.

The Election Commission then wrote to President Pratibha Patil that the tone and tenor of the minister was utterly contemptuous.

"We have found the tone and tenor of the union minister dismissive and utterly contemptuous about the Commission's lawful direction to him, besides the fact that his action is damaging the level playing field in the election," the Election Commission said in its letter to the president.

The president forwarded the letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

When a relatively inexperienced varun makes a speech during parliamentary election penal action is sought by congress, but when a senior experienced minister holding important portfolio makes a disgraceful speech and challenges the ec his action should be taken as an act in the heat of the moment. What a nice way to interpret similar actions by different persons from different parties and different levels of political experience.

Khurshid is a muslim and Varun is Hindu and BJP member.Obviously congress wants to close the case against Khurshid. While against varun they want action. Are the hindus of this country listning.

He's got the message out - Congress will give additional quota for the muslims. Now EC takes action or not he's got the message out. Still Congress is a secular party. Hence is the meaning Secular "anything aganist the Hindus"? The sad fact is that they'll still get away with this as they know (like all the rulers who've oppressed the Hindus for thousands of years) how to divide & rule the Hindus.

Only now voters can decide. Whether they (Muslims as well) want a visibly divided society or an all inclusive growth. I request all (including my Muslim brothers) to oust congress to teach her a lesson. To tell her that do not treat citizen merely as a vote bank. Three cheers to democracy. Thumbs down to divisive politics.

Anil I strongly support your views. Only one option is left to teach lesson to congressmen by voting. These congressmen have become mad for the sake of Gandhi Family to continue the dynasty.

If Khurshid was so learned about the responsibilities why did he make such statement. This is willful political game by the powerful minister misusing the office he holds. He should be asked to be sacked by the President. We do not have a Seshan in office. Only ...............

How easy it is for Khurshid to say that "Its a closed chapter" as 'things are sorted out'. He broke the Law (great he is the Law Minister) and then say such things happen in democracy. True Khurshid, thats the kind of democracy you have give to Indian people.

Kurshid as a true congress wala is trying to BEFOOL the entire country. Ye to EK NUMBER Ka BADMASH NIKALAA ....he was defiant for a day, adamant for a couple of days - and apologetic on 4th day..a Pyjama...Chor hai..chor!!! If EC waits for PMs word it will come after Sonia approves and the elections are over when the damage is already done to the nation. Whats the use? The EC should have set a deadline for the word from PM or President which should be prior to the Polling date. O'wise what is the sanctity of Moral code of conduct and its duration?

CEC will get retired by the time the PM takes up the matter! What is the use of our outmoded Constitution? Pity the CEC. He should know that both (himself and the PM) sail in the same boat!

Since PM and Khurshid are from the same party what can you expect from PM.Will ask EC to forgive and forget the issue, does it have any sense to say that EC is an empowered body.Yes EC is empowered body for the ruling party and by the ruling party that is how our INDIAN laws are made. That is the main reason this political class is dead against of having a LOKPAL as framed by Team ANNA and this political class must be very happy that the people of INDIA has forgotton about LOKPAL.This is how they have been fooling us the AAM ADMI for the last so many years.

What a bad precedent !!! Is it a fact that the CEC is a constitutional post and independent of the govt. of the day. Is it that even the CEC, like PM, president is to " HER MAJESTY " is already hand in glove with the crooks in this well-scripted drama

EC should write another letter asking the authorities to reply within a dead line.In absence of any communication from the PM,Ec should proceed of its own and sue Salman.

Mr.Khurshid was very firm on his statement made in public untill to the point where he got no way out.Thats when he bowed to the EC.The intentions of khurshid were very clear to bribe voters to get the votes for his wife.A law minister is trying to teach the code of conduct to election commission.
So the election commission must stand firm on their actions and take necessary measures to debarr khurshid .
All congress politicians have a common understanding that they being The law makers and law is in their hands to manipulate the way they want. This kind of attitude needs to be corrected.Election commission must teach this dirty politician a good lesson.

"I treat this matter as unfortunate and regret the statement. I bow to the wisdom of the Election Commission" -- This is what is called "vrudha naari paathivratyam" A 60 year old woman, after flirting for 40 years, finally decided to be loyal to the husband and proudly declared that she would be loyal to him hence forth. !!!

His action deserves stringent action against him because he wilfully repeated the statement even after censuring by the Election Commission and challenged the authority of the constitutional body saying that he was prepared to be hanged. We should not expect the P.M. would take any action against his minister. What about Kapil Sibal and Digvijay Singh who have been defending the law minister for his lawless act?
