Earth Day 2011: A Billion Act of Green

Bangalaru: With the world celebrating International Earth Day on Friday, India seems to be hit the most the our fragile ecosystem - courtesy the rapid industrialisation. Disappearing trees, polluted rivers, skyscrapers everywhere, people yearning for a pollution free environment will herald this year's Earth Day celebrations.

    What is Earth Day?

Founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is a day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for our natural environment. The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, was a US centric event but today Earth Day is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

The mission is to broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable environment.

On Earth Day’s 40th anniversary in 2010, over a billion people participated in environmental activities and events in 190 countries.

This year's mission - A Billion Act of Green

The goal of the 2011 Earth Day campaign is to register at least one billion actions before the 2012 Earth Summit in Rio. A dedicated website has been set up where people can easily register their commitments online.

Pledges from business, organisations, governments and individuals are being taken through the website to honor Earth Day and create a more sustainable world.

we need to bring awareness to public about importance of forests.
government of each country should provide alternative to wood cutting
for fuel, decor etc. people not having any source for fuel, they will cut the trees. let us join together and bring the awareness

The govt should make biofuels out of farm waste, and sell them through the PDS.
These fuels are excellent replacement to fire wood, and already in use in industry for boilers. Cost of making it is little cheaper than the cost of wood.
Can be made of groundnut shell, rice husk, etc.

The Vedas are nature centric and man along with all other life forms is part of the natural processes. There are many hymns dedicated to Mother Earth in the Rig and Atharvana Vedas. The various forms of nature are represented symbolically as personifications of Sakthi or feminine energy. This Sakthi is also the synergy that is responsible for the interconnectedness of sentient as well insentient beings of nature. A few hymns from the Bhumi Suktha in the Atharvana Veda :
Your regions, earth, to Eastward and to Westward.

Southward and Westward, may they receive me kindly.

On whom the men of olden days roamed.

On whom the conquering Gods smote the demons,

the home of cattle, horses and of birds,

Her upon whom the trees, lord of forest,

stand firm unshakable, in every place,

      this long-enduring Earth . . .

O Purifying Earth, I you invoke,

O Patient Earth, by sacred word enhanced,

bearer of nourishment and strength, of food and ghee

O Earth, we would approach you with due praise !

The Earth is Mother, I am son of Earth.

She carries in her lap the foolish and also the wise

She bears the death of the wicked and the wise.

Your circling seasons, nights succeeding days

Your summer, O Earth, your splashing rains,

Yours winter and frosty season yielding too spring-

may each and all produce for us milk !

Whatever, I dig of you, O Earth,

May that grow quickly upon you,

O Pure One, may my thrust never pierce thy

      Vital points, thy heart.

      Truth, unyielding cosmic order, consecration,

Ardour and Prayer and Holy Ritual

Uphold the Earth, May she the ruling Mistress

of what has been and what will come to be,

for us spread wide a limitless domain.....

      [Atharva Veda, 12.1.1]

This nature loving and conserving glorious tradition should be given its due credit and dignity and applied to correct the ills of desecration caused by man to Mother Earth.

We may celebrate US Eath Day and make some halla!
We must celebtrate INDIA EARTH DAY on 7th JULY and invite all people of the Earth to celebrate this to make successful plantation around the EARTH.
Our FOREST DEPARTMENT must invite all NGOs, Schools, Hospitals and all people to plant 7 trees for the 7 days from 1st July to 7 July. And now onwards, they must start to propagate for a massive MOVEMENT for whole INDIA and other countries.
We must appoint some great person to be the AMMBASSADOR for GREEN EARTH from INDIA!
Likewise our many Departments should make jealous efforts to outshine for not only INDIA , but for EARTH! It is also our jealous right to work for the whole EARTH!!!
