Doctors put off protest

Shillong, Sept. 29: Doctors belonging to Meghalaya Medical Services' Association have decided to postpone their decision to cease work on Monday, after the state government invited them for talks.

"Since we will be meeting chief secretary W.M.S. Pariat on Monday morning, we have decided to keep our agitation on hold. We will decide our next course of action after the meeting," association general secretary Aman War said.

The association has been demanding punitive action against police personnel allegedly involved in harassing Walesa N. Sangma, a doctor attached with Chokpot primary health centre in South Garo Hills, on September 25.

The policemen belong to 2nd Meghalaya Police Battalion. Commandant of the battalion N. Rajamarthandan said an IG-level inquiry committee has been set up to inquire into the incident, headed by inspector-general (western range) F.D. Sangma.

The 15 personnel involved in the incident reported to him today, he said.
