Crime, money power shadow Uttar Pradesh polls

New Delhi: Thirty-five percent of the candidates in the second phase of Uttar Pradesh elections are embroiled in criminal cases, two groups said Friday.

The Association for Democratic Research (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) said the number of such contestants in the constituencies had risen since the 2007 election.

A total of 138 candidates or 41 percent of the 337 in the second phase were "crorepatis" -- a 22 percent increase from 2007.

Among the 118 candidates who have criminal cases registered against them is Mukhtar Ansari (Quami Ekta Dal), who has the maximum of 15 cases.

He is followed by Upendra (Samajwadi Party) and Javed Iqbal (Bahujan Samaj Party). They have 11 and five criminal cases against them respectively.

All major parties have given ticket to candidates with tainted background, ADR and NEW said.

The share of the Samajwadi Party in this category is 30 out of 59 candidates, BSP (23/59), Bharatiya Janata Party (20/55), Congress (19/59), Peace Party (8/35) and Janata Dal-United (12/50).

Over 50 percent of the offending candidates are battling charges of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, robbery and extortion.

Leading the list with 12 such candidates is Samajwadi Party followed by BSP and Congress (10 each), BJP (9), JD-U (7), Peace Party (3) and Quami Ekta Dal (2).

Assets of legislators contesting a second time have soared.

BSP's Sarvesh Kumar Singh (Azamgarh) has Rs.8.81 crore in assets followed by Pramod of BSP (Deoria, Rs.4.51 crore) and Rajkumar of BSP (Ghazipur, Rs.4.38 crore).

There is substance in the statement of Deedy. All parties are engaged in fishing in the muddled water during election times. It is possible to conduct election free of corrupt practice incuding the influence of money and muscle powers provided the govt has the will and determination to bring legislation for the purpose. Those who say 'impossible' should vacate the position for pragmatic people who know the art of making foolproof laws as well as implementing it by meticulous action.

A Lokayukta Inspector while trying to get bribe of three lakh during an enquiry against a bogus complaint lost his belongings worth more than three lakh at home by theft in day light! A Thanedar on duty while attending Pooja along with his subordinates in a Hanuman Mandir seeking blesssings esp. for wisdom and acumen for succesful Investigation was outwitted by two prisoners by freeing themselves breaking prison walls.Criminals, money bags and muscilemen rule the nation and people find ways to do all nefarious criminal acts. One cheats the other and the other cheats some other!!!!
I feel 2014 election is a contest between the righteous patriots and criminals in this country. The youth of the nation should come forward with their declared ideology and methodology to lead this nation under the present constitution to make it a habitat for people who have freedom of consscience, freedom of expression, freedom from poverty , ignorance, illness and so on. Our democratic insstitutions should not be a playground for criminals and hypocrites any more.

There could be two solutions to this problem though none of them will completely eliminate the problem completely.
      1. Election commission could disqualify all such candidates specially if their crimes records are related to charges of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, robbery and extortion. It is not clear why this independent consitutional body does not do it. Maybe because the cases are not proven against them. The big problem here is that, In this country where the corruption is high even the witnesses and proofs could be suppressed and also cases are never tried in time. Also in this method there could be some good politician getting vindicated by politically motivated false allegations against them. which is the drawback.
      2. Right to reject, people can decided to reject, since all parties have about 30-40% of candidates with criminal records, atleast in some constituencies all the candidates may have criminal records and if people know about their gooda attitudes then then can straightaway reject all the candidates. This can forces all parties to rethink on how they select candidates. Further if this happens in many constituencies then their is a strong reason for the parties to rethink on their strategies. So we should press for Right to Reject to be incorporated in voting.

Please vote thinking on country's benefit and not your current benefit. Politicians may engage you in short term temptations. We have to keep our long term benefits. Please....think over this.

I will blam the so called good mens of society who don't make any effort to come to politics in right inspiration and talent.

how can good men of society tolerate bull shits, example narayan muthy entered politics in good cause, then a person like him could not tolerate the political heirarchy becuse these politicians are all un-educated, they go beyond limits to there profits and there cuase and wins ( you know what i meant ) no one can stop them as they are the gods. ( becuse they can manuplate things and control the cops in the city acording to them.) better you learn what politics is and then you talk about good men of the society.

Then how will we remove the corruption ?
      • Geevarughese 3 months ago
Corruption cannot be tackled by politicians alone. Sved is hundrd percent correct in his views. It was an English man who said that good people should be blamed for all ills in our society because they do not come forward to fight against evil forces to make it after their heart's content. In my opinion , it is not necessary that they should join politics to cleanse the society. All good people wherever they are should do the righteous by the virtue of being righteous. In their sphere of action they should also resist evil and fight for justice, truth and triumph of righteousness. IN INDIA WE THINK THAT POLITICS IS THE ONLY CHOSEN ARENA FOR THIS GREAT FIGHT AND LEAVE EVERYTHING TO POLITICIANS KNOWING NOT THAT THIS IS THE BREEDING GROUND OF CORRUPTION. People join politics , accumulate wealth and thereafter start homilies of virtues to others. In a country like India where every inch is corrupt, the good one should stand still and fight against corruption.
