Cobras opening batsman Andrew Puttick was quick out of the blocks in the South African four-day championship, hitting an unbeaten 166 Thursday on the opening day of the season.
Fellow opener Alistair Gray also displayed impressive early form with a knock of 71 as the Cape Town franchise closed on 322-2 against Lions in north-west university town Potchefstroom.
Puttick and Gray put on 188 for the first wicket before Pumelela Matshikwe (1-36) separated them while another Lions bowler, Protea Imran Tahir (1-90), toiled unsuccessfully in spring sunshine.
There were even more runs in mining city Kimberley as hosts Knights amassed 355-7 against title holders Titans with Ryan Bailey (157 not out) and Morne van Wyk (133) to the fore.
Knights were in trouble at 59-4 as Rowan Richards snapped up two wickets and Ethy Mbhalati and David Wiese one each before Bailey and Van Wyk got on top of the bowlers.
Dolphins and Warriors received first round byes in a championship which takes a break in November and early December for the one-day championship and concludes next February.
