Congress committed to fighting corruption: Rahul

Varanasi, Feb 6 (IANS) The Congress party was committed to fighting corruption at all levels and has demonstrated its will by taking prompt action in every case that has come to light, party general secretary Rahul Gandhi said here Monday.

"The Congress party was committed to fighting corruption at all levels and we have demonstrated our will by taking prompt action in every case that has come to light," he said at a rare press conference here two days before the start of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Accusing other political parties of doublespeak on the issue, he said: "Those who were truly committed to fighting corruption do not go about talking. Other political parties only indulged in much loud talk on corruption," he asserted.

Citing the example of the Lokpal bill that was tabled in parliament in December 2011, Gandhi said: "I stood up in parliament for a strong constitutional Lokpal bill that would have built the institution of a truly independent and powerful Lokpal on the lines of the Election Commission, which has proved that institutions can work independently in this country."

"But sadly, the opposition did not allow that to happen simply because they felt that the idea was initiated by Rahul Gandhi and by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Little did they care to understand that it was the people's idea.

"But let me make it loud and clear to the opposition that we do not believe in giving up and will eventually make it happen -- whether they like it or not," Gandhi added.

The Lok Sabha had passed the Lokpal bill but it failed to clear the Rajya Sabha due to noisy protests by the opposition. The house may now take up the bill in parliament's budget session next month.

Taking on Bharatiya Janata Party patriarch L.K. Advani on the corruption issue, Gandhi said: "The fact of the matter is that Mr. Advani himself has always chosen to remain silent on the issue of rampant corruption in the BJP ruled states of Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh."

Asked to comment on his sister Priyanka being termed a "seasonal frog" by some opposition leaders, he quipped: "In that case, I should also be labeled as one because I am her brother." He, however, skirted a question on the possibility of Priyanka campaigning outside the confines of the Gandhi family pocket boroughs of Amethi and Rae Bareli.

Blatant lie. He never asked the govt. to take disciplinery action against corrupts and kept his total silence in all cases of scams. Some ministers are still trying to help Kano mozhi and are using their official powers to the fullest to threat the witnesses through their relatives to withdraw or give favourable witness or face consequences. Not only that some are even threatening the CBI officials itself and the CBI has given this information to the court itself. This is just unthinkable that the CBI officials are being pressurised or threatened. This shows that the individuals are practically threatening the Govt. Of India. The CBI must officially encounter and kill them. How come the govt. is sitting like a lame duck and not ordering the CBI to encounter the threateners.

What is Congress...a Ruling Party to rule India...India needs their brethren to make laws and scrap all English Laws which had been made to rule India.. If a father makes a law in his house for smooth functioning of the house and taking care of all the members of the family then he will think about larger interests about the society and the nation and such kind of laws are required and not ANNOUNCEMENTS from the Ruling Party who wants to rule the state, country.... JAI BHARAT

Corruption is a serious problem in India and all political parties are involved in it. Blaming one party alone will not solve the problem.

This will be biggest joke of this century."Congress is committed to fight corruption. We have taken action on the culprits".As per Rahul ,Chidambaram is a clean man.Lokpal could not be passed in Rajya Sabha not because of opposition parties but due to a well scripted and directed drama by pigwigs(bigwigs) of your party. How long you will play with the sentiments of the people of UP and India?????

yes, due to commited efforts by congress , that such a big names in politics are behind bar. I had not seen cabinet ministers and chief ministers are behind bar since my childhood.due to their money and muscle power earlier they got free immediately, now due to govt. free hand to CBI , we are seeing those big names behind bar. GO AHEAD RAHUL, WE YOUNGSTERS ARE WITH YOU.

What is requested to consider, this govt has taken action on honourable court directives, removed chiefminister, cabinet minister etc. Shree prithviraj chauhan is doing well in maharashtra, and hence maharashtra is becoming corruption free state.
Coalition govt has certain compulsions, weakness, hence there is delay in policy making & implementation. Red tapism need to be controlled.
No doubt corruption has become rampant, people are not having peaceful life , however we wish this govt shall put in more concrete, result orientive efforts. I state this since only allegation, criticism
      does not resolve problems.
